We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Helen Goodrum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Helen, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I started my career as a performer. I traveled the world, dancing on many stages, living in different communities and cities. During a performance that I had performed over 100 times, I was accidently hit over the head, leading to severe nerve and muscle damage. For the next six months I went from one health practitioner to another, trying to find someone to ‘fix’ me! I was unable to lift my arm, let alone bare weight, handstand or earn a living as a performer.
Eight months after the accident I had my very first Rolfing session. This was my last resort before the surgeon was wanting to do exploratory surgery. Three Rolfing sessions and I was able to move my arm above my head, Ten sessions I was able to handstand again. Without Rolfing I would not have been able to continue my performance career!
During my third Rolfing session I promised myself that I wanted to learn the body from a Rolfing perspective. I wanted to have the knowledge to be able to guide and help clients to heal and ‘fix’ themselves. I had spent the last eight months expecting someone else to be able to fix me, but all along I had the power (with a little guidance) to fix myself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

She combines a first rate knowledge of the body with an intuitive sense of where my body need to go, challenging me, but never pushing too hard. I always walk away having learned something and with stuff to practice in my daily life. she is gentle, straight forward and humorous, and I feel sure she will put you at ease.” Client Testimonial

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Establishing trust between myself and each client is almost more important to the knowledge and work that I do. As a Rolfer I usually have to address places in a clients body where they may have pain and/or trauma. If I do not build a trusting relationship with my client I cannot successfully help guide them through the pain.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As a Rolfer, I spend quality time with my clients where my attention is 100% on them. When else do people get to be so focused on themselves with the other person focused on guiding them to be the best they can be? I am listening, responding and guiding.
