We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heidy De La Cruz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heidy below.
Hi Heidy, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission with my podcast is to change the narrative of immigration to a more empathetic and compassionate way – a Jesus approach. The reason I started this podcast is because I feel that the best way to have empathy and compassion with someone is by listening to their stories, so I have immigrants come one the show to share their journey of coming to the US. They share the culture shocks they experienced, their first memories of coming to the US, and how they adapted to living to a new country.
My parents were immigrants from the Dominican Republic so I saw first-hand the struggles that immigrants go through in this country. This mission is very close to my heart.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, I am Heidy De La Cruz – I am a believer, wife, mom, author, poet, and podcaster. My faith plays a major role in everything I do. I use my gift of writing to provide my readers encouraging faith-based blog posts, poetry, and life lessons learned from my experiences. I’ve been writing all my life, poetry started in 7th grade and I started my blog in 2014. My blog first started as an online journal to write my memories but the more I learned about blogging the more it shifted into what it is today. As a writer, I journal daily, whether it’s my prayers, ideas, or thoughts, and I read an article once about the benefits of journaling so I started creating my own journals and notebooks, so I sell those on Amazon and Etsy. Also, because of how journaling has helped me I want the same for others.
Podcasting I got into it in March of 2022. Although, I’ve listened to podcasts for years it wasn’t until 2019 that I got the urge to host my own show. However, my original plan wasn’t with the topic of immigration, I wanted to have guest come on to share the incredible things they are doing in their lives. I wanted to provide a platform to highlight them and share their stories. The idea of the immigration stories came after I read an article on Medium where a migrant from Kenya shared how each culture shock decreased her confidence. I had not heard of a podcast that had immigrants share what they go through in the US and so The American Dream In The Eyes of Immigrants Podcast was born.
In everything I do, I do it with love and I hope all my readers and followers can feel it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
When it comes to my podcast – I love when people recommend their friends to be a guest. That word of mouth recommendation hits differently. And since starting this podcast I’ve gained the courage to ask people to be a guest on the show, which is something I didn’t have to do before.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting feedback when people read your work. Especially, with my poetry book that I published in July, the feedback I’ve received has been amazing and most rewarding. People have told me that it’s very relatable and that they feel the emotions I wrote about, which is actually what I wanted to happen, it’s just amazing that people are getting that from something I wrote, it’s unexplainable.
