We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heidi Webb a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heidi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
An important lesson I learned while working in the film industry is that you have to do what’s right for you and your family. I met people who thought they knew what was best for me, but the fact was that no one could fully understand my priorities. They couldn’t understand the intricacies of my family dynamic or my goals, and I came to the conclusion that I didn’t owe anyone an explanation. This was a very valuable lesson to learn, and also allowed me to greater appreciate when I did have the opportunity to work with folks who valued and respected me.
Heidi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Heidi Webb. I’m a stay at home mom and digital artist. I recently started my own design company called “Heidi Webb Design,” the umbrella under which I mostly draw nature-inspired pieces which are then used as pattern designs, greeting cards, and stickers – hopefully with more products to come in the future! I think what sets me apart from others is the lens with which I view the world, which I attempt to unashamedly bring into my art. I allow myself be silly, and strive to own my creative voice, in order to spark joy and help others enjoy the simple things in life.
I am especially proud of my work with the brand Jungle Jams. Their mission is to create styles that are comfortable and unique, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to bring that vision to life by drawing cute animals! It is humbling and amazing to see my son wearing something that I designed!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Shared joy! Knowing that something I created sparks joy in someone else is so rewarding. Being an artist can sometimes feel like a self-centered endeavor… I draw because I like to, and I mostly draw what I like, so having someone else enjoy that too is very special.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
There won’t be a point where I’ve “made it” as a creative. Artists create because they have an intrinsic need to – to share their story, to feel connected to others, to express emotion, capture a memory. I have certain goals, and can be proud of accomplishments, but the work of creating will never be done.
