Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heidi McBain. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Heidi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Tell us the story of the early days from when you decided to start your own firm/practice to establishing the practice. I loved the idea of owning my own therapy private practice and having full autonomy over my schedule and the clients I work with on a weekly basis.
What were the main steps you had to take,
I spent a lot of time talking to friends and family members who owned their own therapy practices to find out more about what worked for them, and also what they’d do differently if they had to do it all over again.
What were some of the key challenges in setting up your own office/practice
One of the biggest challenges I ran into early on was push back around wanting a fully online therapy practice. This was a few years pre-COVID. I heard from many people that, “it just wasn’t done” and that “your practice won’t be successful.” This was hard to hear, but also lit a fire in me to prove them wrong and show them a fully online private practice could be successful.
Would you have done anything differently knowing what you know now?
I think I spent a little too much time worrying about if the naysayers were right, and that my business vision wouldn’t come to fruition. I wish I had spent that time trusting in myself and my vision, as my business has been even more successful than I initially imagined!
Any advice for a young professional who might be considering starting their own practice? Find a great therapist or coach who you connect with to help support you during the ups and downs of starting a new business. I had a therapist and a coach, and the help and support I got from both of them is immeasurable!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For folks who may not have read about you before, can you please tell our readers about yourself I’m a Texas Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I’ve been married for 21 years, and we have two teenage kids and one rescue cat.
How you got into your industry / business / discipline / craft etc,
I have an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego. Early in my career I focused on couples, families, children and teens, but I now focus exclusively on mental wellness for moms and moms-to-be.
What type of products/services/creative works you provide
I offer online therapy and coaching sessions, as well as pregnancy and postpartum online mental wellness courses.
What problems you solve for your clients and/or what you think sets you apart from others.
I specialize in maternal mental health, and focus on mental wellness for moms during pregnancy, postpartum and throughout motherhood.
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.
I proud of my Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International, as this entailed many client hours, specialized trainings and finally passing an intensive exam.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Connecting with other providers in the birthing community such as doctors, midwives, doulas, etc.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I love the book, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, it helps me stay focused on doing one thing at a time, starting with the most important one.
Another great book is, “Eat that Frog!” by Brian Tracy. I love the concept of figuring out what thing needs to be done first that will make all the other things in your day easier moving forward.
