We were lucky to catch up with Heaven Beam recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Heaven thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I would say I’ve always been a “risk taker” when it comes to reaching my goals but one of the most recent risks, I’ve taken would definitely have to be starting Heaven Beam Beauty in 2021. This was after having gone through a traumatic experience that led me to develop a severe case of imposter syndrome throughout the pandemic. For me it was very difficult because it required me to once again be vulnerable and put myself “out there” after trying to protect myself by hiding in the shadows for so long.
In the end starting a business has been empowering in the sense that I’m allowing myself to live in spite of my fears and past experiences. It really teaches you a lot when you move past the barriers that you put up for yourself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Aside from being an entrepreneur I am a clinical therapist and content creator (stay tuned: creative projects to come) in day-to-day life. I would say I’m truly a boss babe at heart – I feel like I’ve always had ideas for different businesses and ways to have a bigger impact on the world throughout life and that’s what I’m working on executing now. That’s also how my business Heaven Beam Beauty came alive. What’s funny is I actually became interested in making DIY holistic skincare in 2016 which I let go of at the time due to a lack of time and resources. In 2021, I told myself it was time to move forward with it and make it happen, no excuses. And that’s exactly what I did. Heaven Beam Beauty is a beauty brand but that holds the essence of not only looking good but feeling good from the inside out. I really just want people to have a positive experience when they interact with my brand.
& my hope is that as I continue to grow as an entrepreneur, clinician and content creator I’m able to pay it forward in a real way. I’m always working towards evolving personally and professionally and eventually help others to do the same – that’s what matters to me.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Unlearning that I had to be someone else (a different person, come from a different socioeconomic background, have a different body type) in order to deserve access to the good things in life and that it’s completely OKAY to expect more from life, yourself, others just AS I AM without modifications. While I believe in personal growth and changing as you mature I could never deny myself of my roots, who I am and where I came from.
Feeling as though I need to “be” someone else definitely stemmed from a history of generational “curses” as well as societal limitations and expectations. However – committing to becoming the best version of myself puts me in a place where generational curses and societal limitations could never truly hold me back, you know?
The reality is you have to embrace your individuality no matter what you’ve been told. It’s hard but necessary!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Absolutely, there’s sooo many! As a fairly new entrepreneur I have learned to rely on emotional intelligence, consistency and self-sufficiency. As we all know when you first start any new venture (business, college etc.) your usually doing things alone and need to find solid ways to support yourself mentally and emotionally in order to thrive. Below are a list of a few books, videos and websites that help me stay motivated and maintain a growth mindset as I go through my journey.
