We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heave . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heaven below.
Heaven , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I believe that I started my business at the right time. Starting at a young age gave me time to grow as an individual and implement the things that I learned growing up into my business. I have been a business owner for a while now and I can say time makes a huge difference. Looking back to where I started, I am in awe of how much things have changed and the person I have become. Starting a business at a young age was not easy, but it allowed me to be more knowledgeable than most at my age.

Heaven , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Heaven. I am a nineteen-year-old self-taught hairstylist, who also aspires to become a doctor. I have been braiding since the age of eleven and have been going strong ever since. The very first time was on myself and I received so many compliments for my first time! I then knew that I was destined to perfect my craft and see how far it would take me. And look at me now! My mother has always been my #1 supporter, she invested in my craft and motivated me to be the best that I can be. And I wouldn’t be this far without her love and support.
Despite my passion for braiding, my future aspiration is to become an Obstetrician-Gynecologist. Since the age of three, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor. I would often spend countless hours in my imagination caring for my stuffed animals and barbie dolls as my Pediatrician would for me. As time progressed, I wasn’t sure of the exact profession I wanted to pursue until witnessing the birth of my brother. In the delivery room, I was in awe to an see African American woman wearing a white coat and a stethoscope around her neck. Her presence held so much power, confidence, and compassion, and she did the task of taking care of my mother and brother so gracefully. At that very moment, I had a strong desire to become just like her.
My mind was set!
And I am now attending the #1 Historically Black University to graduate Black doctors; Xavier University of Louisiana. On top of that, I have been accepted to travel to Nairobi, Kenya for a study abroad program where I will be pursuing an internship and continuing my studies. I am happy to say that I am getting closer to turning my dreams of becoming a doctor into reality. And doing so while successfully running my business as a hairstylist.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
CONSISTENCY!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Attending a university has been the best source of new clients. Word of mouth is a powerful thing around campus. And I can say that a good reputation creates consistent clientele.
