We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Wincovitch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Heather, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
As an artist you find that you meddle with different depths of art. My personal art that comes from within, life experiences and such if different from the work that I find myself profiting from. Perhaps, it is within me that I don’t release my personal work as much or maybe I just haven’t found the right niche. I paint murals and embellish furniture mostly for children’s rooms for profit but painting canvas with various mediums is my forte and what I love to do when I have the free time to just let loose. I use my hands, brushes and various other methods to incorporate feeling and mood. Overall I love painting for individuals and families and providing them with what they are looking for but I get lost in the paintings that come from within me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My creative nature has been with me since I was a child. I have always been creating, from crafts, to jewelry, paintings, murals, Christmas ornaments, motorcycle helmets, to children’s clothing, furniture, and signs.
I began doing side work and through word of mouth I was able to secure jobs painting murals and furniture. I picked up painting Christmas ornaments after a bank asked me to paint them for each staff member. From there additional orders came and I was able to elaborate and paint whatever came to my mind or to ale special orders.
After my divorce I had to take a few steps backward and begin working full time and find time for my work. I still paint but unfortunately not as often as I would like because I could get lost in my art and paint for hours on end.
Painting canvas and large paintings is my forte but my canvas paintings are personal and express the shades of life and moments I have overcome or experience. Some are beautiful and some are deep. I feel my paintings can be defined by each onlooker and although I have meaning behind each a person can find meaning of their own. My hopes are to show them at sometime in a gallery.
At this time most of my profitable work is through special orders and word of mouth but it keeps me busy and wanting more. I plan to expand my work as I am growing and my kiddos are older and starting their own lives while my youngest daughter is heading to college in 2024. This will give me more time to get lost in my artwork, build my collection and take on additional art jobs to expand my outreach and build it into my full time career.

Have you ever had to pivot?
As an at home mother I was able to paint and take on jobs on a whim. At times my children would come with me and other times they would stay with their father or grandparents.
With changes in life and going through a divorce I had to take a few steps back and venture back into the employment world of Monday – Friday, 9 – 5 working. This was ensured income whereas art jobs comes more sporadically. Great paying jobs, but not guaranteed income. This impacted my work, as I still work a full time job, it took me a little while to fit in my art work and upcoming art jobs I had lined up. I am working toward expanding my creativity and possibly jumping back into the world of murals and paintings that will sell to the majority. But, I am not backing away from my forte and will continue to build my collection in hopes of one day displaying my work in a gallery.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Many non-creative I find don’t understand the passion put into art. The release it gives and the way it allows the artist to speak without saying a word.
The time it takes and the expense for supplies also baffles those who do not appreciate the process and creative aspect art brings to the soul
