We were lucky to catch up with Heather Vickers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, appreciate you joining us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Customers are what keep any business going and growing. I make customer happiness a top priority in my business. I always try to make sure they know how appreciated they are by handwriting notes to put in every order, tossing a few freebies in all orders, and of course offering a discount code for future purchases. Going above and beyond to say thank you as many times as I can has proven to make a difference in my business. My business would be nothing without my amazing customers.

Heather, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Heather. I have lived in a small town in Alabama my entire life. I have worked in some form of customer service since my very first job in 2008, a year before I graduated high school. I am a people person and love meeting new people. I married the love of my life in 2016 and became a bonus mom to an amazing little boy when I said “I do”. In 2018, we added another little boy to the family and in 2019, our caboose and only baby girl was born. Being a mom is everything to me and I do everything I do because of and for my kiddos. I started my business, Beautiful Skin, in hopes of being home with my kids more and having the financial freedom to give them the best life possible. I am currently a bartender part time and I love it. I have always been big on skincare and the big box store products were never good for my skin. I started making my own sugar scrub to exfoliate a very long time ago. I have always wanted to be a business owner and one day while making my own personal body scrub, the idea came to me. Practice batches started right away and I never stopped. I went through roughly 2 years of extensive testing before officially releasing my foaming sugar scrub in July 2022 and my moisturizing body oil followed in February 2023. Using only the best quality ingredients, I make every batch of products by hand. Every part of Beautiful Skin is made, packaged, labeled, and shipped by me. Being a one-woman show is a lot of work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I started building my social media following from friends and people local to my area. Then, I offered held a contest for inviting new people to my social media pages. Each follower would share a post and invite 5+ friends for a chance to win free products. I have completed this twice and now I have followers throughout the country. I am still small but social media is a great way to build a customer base when first starting out. I plan to continue contests every 6 months to grow more and more.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social Media and word of mouth are both super important and effective sources for new clients. Reviews from existing customers tend to bring new customers every time.
