We recently connected with Heather Stewart and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My first career was the traditional sort that people were told was the thing to do. I got a university degree in finance and then obtained my CPA – CA designation. During this time, I knew that, while I was good at it, accounting was not lighting me up!
After 15 years working in the corporate world, one day, I knew that things had to change, and if I wanted something different, it was up to me.
So, I quit my big fancy career and dove headlong into the world of wellness.
I became a yoga teacher (now 20 years later, I’m still teaching and loving it), a personal trainer, and a registered massage therapist. I was doing what lit me up: helping others find their way to wellness, whatever that looked like.
Ten years into my massage career, I realized that many of my colleagues were coming to me for business advice, so I added business coaching to help wellness professionals thrive.
Then, in 2021, during the time of COVID-19, I had a stroke. I spent three days in the emergency room alone as there were no beds in the hospital ward, and no one was allowed to visit due to COVID-19 restrictions.
During that time, I had three days to examine my life and all the lives going on around me in the ER. I realized I had a greater mission—to facilitate the transformation of others to their best lives ever—not just business coaching, not just physical wellness, but holistically in every facet of life.
Out of this incident came my podcast – Back to Me, Wellness Your Way, my upcoming book, Life is Suffering Until You Choose, and my coaching program, The Thriving Life Method™.
Now, I help people balance six key areas of their lives and give them the tools to navigate life’s ups and downs.
The six areas are Body, Emotions, Community, Occupation, Money and Engagement – and they spell the word B.E.C.O.M.E.
Heather, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Much of how I got into the industry is encapsulated in my previous question.
I provide one-on-one and small-group coaching that helps people really dig into what they truly want (and don’t want) in their lives. Many people gloss over this area or just adopt what is trending without really examining what is right for them.
My breadth of experience in the corporate world, in the wellness world, being an employee, transitioning to business owner, and everything else that makes up a life lived give me the ability to connect and understand what is happening for my clients.
I am non-judgmental and genuinely want every person on the planet to find their inner harmony.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Anyone and everyone can hang out a shingle and open a business. The thing is, humans are funny. They often don’t like new things or change, even if they think that is precisely what they want. To get noticed and have those first clients coming to you is the first step – tapping into your existing network is critical here. You aren’t trying to sell your products or services to them; you are simply letting them know what you do and are asking them if they know anyone who might like to learn more.
Once you have those first few under your belt, you are off! And the best way to grow… referrals! One hundred percent of the time, it is much easier to have your clients sing your praises and send you more clients than to start cold looking for new people. How do you get them to sing your praises? Deliver extreme value and ask who they know who would love what you do.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Many small business owners feel like the things that bug them bug everyone. I had to unlearn this for sure!
Email newsletters are still the best way to stay engaged with your customers and keep you top of mind. I had to realize that just because my inbox was full of unwanted mail, this was not true for everyone. Also, if you deliver value in your emails, not just a sales promo, then they will read it! Whatever your area of expertise, share what you know, and they will come to you for more.
