Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Sky. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Heather, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
As I was completing the third decade of my life, I was also facing a multitude of transitions. I exited a nearly decade-long abusive marriage, leaving me as a single mother, and decided to re-enroll at university in order to complete my education. At the end of my degree program, I also decided to enroll in a simultaneous 200-hr yoga teacher training program. Between YTT, school, and motherhood it’s fair to say I was in the midst of a difficult (but purpose-driven) balancing act. I graduated from both university and my training program within a week of one another. Although I had every intention of embarking on a new career path as a writer, having graduated with an English Literature degree in Creative Writing, I immediately started to receive prominent opportunities in the realm of yoga. Not unlike the path of a writer, it can be challenging (if not impossible) to make a full-time living as a yoga teacher, so I was faced with a decision. Do I try to balance both, or do I choose one over the other. I decided to follow the flow of energy and step onto the yoga path, and 7 years later, I still own and operate a thriving yoga business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Heather Sky is both Owner and principal Yoga Therapist for Rebelution Yoga + Wellness, and has spent thousands of hours practicing and teaching the many dimensions of her craft. Heather isn’t one for titles and accolades, but she discovered alignment & biomechanics after questioning the impact of some yoga traditions, and is acknowledged for her expertise in these areas of study. She focuses on making the asana practice accessible for all bodies, offering a unique methodology that helps bridge the gap between eastern and western medicine philosophies. Her whole being approach to individual health and wellness has earned her a reputation over the years as one of the most knowledgeable and transformative yoga therapists in the region. She specializes in applying a combination of yoga, meditation, breathwork, and other mindfulness tools designed to help clients integrate both science-based and spiritual-based practices to help us lead more meaningful lives. This business was founded on her resolve to create a safe commUNITY for all who call themselves teacher and/or student of yoga and life.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like so many other businesses, Rebelution Yoga + Wellness was severely impacted by the pandemic. Yoga was labeled a non-essential business, and all of the studios I was affiliated with either shut down temporarily or closed their doors permanently. I was faced with yet another difficult decision… Do I pivot my career entirely? Or do I figure out how to adapt to the current circumstances? Not only 2020, but the years that followed, presented a multitude of challenges as I navigated my decision to stay committed to the path of yoga. There were times it felt as if every step forward was forged through quicksand, and nothing would ever return to the way it was, but I refused to give up and grew (both personally and professionally) exponentially in the process.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
As of 2023, I have embarked on a new journey… future owner of the Rebelution Yoga + Wellness Eco Retreat Center. I was able to purchase 8.5 acres to begin this process with the help of an investor I initially met in the yoga studio some years ago. She had made a commitment to practice yoga every day for one year (which she did), and I was honored to be one of her many teachers. Throughout that process, and the years that followed, we became close friends and supporters of one another’s businesses. When I told her about my vision for the future of Rebelution Yoga + Wellness, she wanted to be a part of it, with the end goal being that we would retire together on the property someday (the perfect union of personal and professional relationship). We are now in the beginning stages of that journey and cannot wait to see what the future holds!
