We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Shew. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Heather, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Well first, I would like to acknowledge what success looks like to me since it is a personal measure and not an universal one. Success for me looks like growth, personally and professionally. Growth goals for me include six figure years, expansion beyond Georgia, paid travel, 4-6 hour work days, a few investment properties, serving the underprivileged in a capacity and celebrating life with the people I love as often as possible. Now, I think what it’s going to take for me or for anybody to become successful is doing the work, taking risks, failing forward, consistent unlearning of old mindsets/habits and building new ones. Some major skills to develop are perseverance, discipline, consistency, time management and emotional agility. Work through those childhood traumas, insecurities, thought processes, identify triggers, boundaries and develop healthy communication around it all. A lot of people tend to think they can just build a thriving and sustainable business without putting in the work to actually become a better individual but they will lose in the end every time. External gain without internal freedom is a special kind of hell.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Serviced x Shew originally started out as H&K Entertainment in 2018 with my best friend, Kyn. She is a R&B artist here in Atlanta, Georgia and while she created her music, I did a lot of things for her visually including photos, graphic design, videos, etc. Our brands expanded beyond entertainment therefore we parted ways and developed our own companies even though we continue to work together. I continued to do photography and video on the side of my 9-5 until 2022 but by a little faith and divine alignment, my business went full-time. I ended up expanding my services to include skills gained from my corporate background along with my creative background and my innate desire to just serve others. I now recognize myself as a personal, professional and creative assistant whose services are customizable and tailored to the needs of my clients. I provide additional support to moms, business owners, corporations, non-profits, ministry leaders, musicians… you name it! The problem I solve is taking an idea or task from idol to executed, freeing up time from my clients to focus on other things. In addition, I tend to naturally coach my clients in self/business development throughout working with them because as referenced before, external gain without internal freedom is not the move. The overall wellness and quality of life my client experiences is more important to me than just receiving a paid invoice. To my future clients, just ask! I do not post every single task that I do so a lot of times people are looking for help in certain areas that they can’t find but I am here to serve you! If I cannot execute on a task, I most likely will have a resource/connect for you who can!
**NEW SERVICE ALERT**- I am now a licensed and active real estate agent in Georgia! 🎉
Have you ever had to pivot?
Even though I had been in business since 2018, going full-time in 2022 was exhilarating and freeing but also very eye-opening and scary. I did have a cushion to assist me in my transition because I had unintentionally prepared for it; the government entity I was previously working for owed me some pay outs. So honestly for the first couple of weeks, I was chilling, thinking about how great it was to break out of the cycle, going out to lunches, spending so much time with family and friends and doing work whenever I felt like it. However, after about a month, the realization of what was actually happening started to kick in. Nobody was telling me what to do and oh how that was a blessing and a curse. I realized it really was ALL on me and because I had never had a managerial position, I didn’t know how to manage my own stuff! That created a lot of fears and doubts and insecurities starting to circulate in my mind which ultimately sent me into a paralyzation state. I didn’t know what to do so I didn’t do anything besides make some TikToks and Canva templates but it wasn’t as meaningful as it could have been and definitely not as effective as it should have been! There were so many moments when I got on Indeed to find another job but nothing came through. I remember praying to God for a sign if I was doing what I am suppose to be doing and He answered. The next day I had a meeting with my biggest paid client who ended up keeping me as a retainer, to this day! That little sign gave me all the strength to not give up. At the beginning of 2023, I told God that I want this business to be His business. I want to do it with Him, for Him. I fasted for January and decided to attend my church that I haven’t been to since pre-pandemic. At the end of service, they made an announcement to sign-up for the free business mastermind for small-business owners on how to do business God’s way. I WAS IN AWE!!!! It was so divine and aligned for me to be in that building that specific day. Honestly since then, I really haven’t questioned if I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing… my mind has just shifted to: how are we going to execute on this, by any means! The days get blurry but the vision is clear and I hold onto that to direct me through my days now. I am still in a “pivoting” season but I humbly celebrate one year of full time entrepreneurship this month! Get clear on what you want and say NO to anything that isn’t that. There’s really no secret besides doing the work + not giving up.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Here’s a secret: most of my clients don’t come from social media. Most of my clients are from industry connects I have had for years , friends + referrals. I had built rapport with so many people by showing up for them before I even had a brand. If you check my numbers, I don’t even think I have a 1,000 followers on my business page. However I won’t say it isn’t important but I think the thing most people miss with marketing/branding is actually connecting with their audience. I am very vulnerable on my social media pages which a lot of people tend to avoid; however, pain points connect people. There are usually a million other people out here doing the same service, offering the same course, product, whatever, why should people buy from you? So always humanize your brand no matter what it is, sell your story and attract the people who are truly for you! Don’t sleep on the power of real-life connections either though!
