We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Shelton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
I used to work for a tv network and was in charge of creating online content, think tik tok before tik tok. I loved short form video and was pretty good at it. I loved capturing people’s personalities and the “in the moment” moments. Everyone in the office loved the content I created except my boss Kyle. Well that’s a pretty strong statement. Let’s just say, he liked it but wasn’t that impressed. He kept pushing me over and over to cut it down and I didn’t know why. He kept telling me to keep the viewer in mind and that they didn’t have context to our office shenanigans. I would cut and cut and you know what, he was right. Now, almost 15 years later, I’m still cutting down content and keeping the viewer, the client, the student in mind. I don’t have to say and show everything that I have in my head. He also gave me this piece of advice that has stuck with me…. work for the person behind you. That means put in processes that weren’t there when you arrived. Make the role better than you found it. Make improvements that you wish you would’ve loved to have seen when you showed up! I still think of Kyle and his leadership still influences me today!
Heather, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey friend! My name is Heather Shelton. I’ve worn a lot of hats over the years—TV host, media coach, brand ambassador, emcee, and now, Life + Leadership Coach. Whether I’m on a stage in front of thousands or coaching one-on-one in a quiet moment, my heartbeat is the same: to help people feel seen, valued, and empowered to show up fully as themselves.
I coach leaders, creatives, and entrepreneurs who want more than just strategy—they want spiritual clarity, purpose-driven growth, and the confidence to walk out what they’ve been called to build. I believe in practical tools and divine direction. I help my clients navigate both.
My background includes years of storytelling in media, representing brands like The Chosen and Walmart, and helping others craft messages that actually move people. Now, I’ve taken all of that experience and poured it into helping individuals and organizations grow with intention and integrity.
Whether I’m facilitating a mindset breakthrough, hosting a marriage podcast with my husband, or leading a workshop on Spirit-led business, I show up with joy, boldness, and a lot of real talk. Because I know firsthand—it’s not just about success, it’s about legacy.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that you treat all people with respect and kindness. Whether you are serving me lunch at my favorite breakfast spot or a new client or a billion dollar company giving me a large contract (happened ya’ll), treat others as you would like to be treated! Everyone is made on purpose with a purpose so respect and kindness are super important to me. I remember someone telling me that I’m the same off -camera as I am on-camera. That was a huge compliment. I strive to be the same everywhere I go, always showing authentically me. If I make sure I’m the best me, then I can help you become the best you. Everyone knows what they get when they hire me and I really enjoy that!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
BE YOU! There is only one of you friend, you are one of one! No one can do what you do, solve the problem like you so lead with that. Authenticity is what I tell my clients is the most important. Be curious about your customer/client, who they are and what they need. You are solving a problem so make sure that you’re constantly giving back something whether you make money or not. ENCOURAGE folks! Lets be more of light instead of complaining about what we don’t have. Come from a place of abundance instead of scarcity. There’s enough for everyone. Create content that edifies and not drains people. Let them walk away thinking, man I love that guy, product, venue!
