We were lucky to catch up with Heather Rymer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I definitely feel happiness being a business owner! I love the freedom and flexibility it gives me to create my own schedule. I love that it allows me to tap into my creative side when planning out the events and working with so many incredible people!
As wonderful as it is, being a business owner can also be a little scary! I am sure other business owners can relate – I worry about failure, of course, and things can go wonky at any given time! Being able to think quickly, stay calm, and focused are super important. Being a business owner has helped me sharpen those qualities and I find myself working on my self-development so much more now! I am really becoming more confident in my decision making, public speaking, and leadership since becoming a business owner and that makes me so happy!
I do work part-time as a preschool educational aide during the school year, so I still get to have that “regular job” experience which I love as well!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the city owner of The Beauty Boost Cleveland! The Beauty Boost is a community for women to feel empowered, healthy and beautiful! We offer events and experiences such as weekend retreat getaways, fitness events, empowerment workshops, and socials. The Beauty Boost is a lifestyle! Women can grab a yearly membership or start small by grabbing an event ticket a la carte!
I was introduced to The Beauty Boost in January 2022 (I had never heard of them prior to that!) by a client of mine. I have partnered with Crunchi, a clean, toxin-free skincare and makeup brand for over 4 years and one of my clients told me about The Beauty Boost. She said that she was involved with them in Cincy and the community is all about women empowerment, health and wellness and it was right up my alley! I had a wild gut reaction to say YES tell me more! I am a big-time planner, I like to have a lot of information and details before deciding most things in my life but something just felt different about this. The Beauty Boost Cleveland was looking for a new city owner and I jumped at the chance to talk with Rachel Kerr, TBB founder! We talked and she invited me to go to an event to check it out – it was The Year Project and I went by myself. Never would I have ever gone to an event (or anything really) by myself!! That alone was hugely outside my comfort zone!
I was seriously amazed by how comfortable I felt in the room with tons of women who I had never met and the whole event was just awesome! I felt so good leaving and knew I had to be involved! I helped as much as I could throughout 2022 and took over as city owner in 2023!
With half the year under my belt, I feel great knowing that I really am putting my whole heart into these events, bringing women from all around the Cleveland area together, helping to make it easier to meet other like-minded women! It can be so hard to find and meet other women who like similar things (we are all about health, wellness, supporting local businesses, supporting women-owned businesses, nature, animals, supporting each other!) and our community comes together to help make that easier!
I have heard amazing feedback from attendees about how comfortable they have felt, how kind and loving the other women are, how awesome other businesses are to each other, how much fun they have had, how they love sharing about our community because of the people we surround ourselves with! This is why I do what I do and why I wanted to be involved.
Any advice for managing a team?
Leading by example and truly being a part of your team is something I feel incredibly strong about! I have an amazing team of 30 brand ambassadors who are my eyes and ears of Cleveland. They help share about our community, make connections with potential venues and partners around the city, and put in their own time to help create wonderful events for our attendees! It is so important for me to be in there with them, putting in the work with them, showing up with them. Being a leader is not just sitting around and telling people what to do. I believe that you lead by example and with teamwork – it might sound cliche but I really believe that. Creating these events together are what make them so successful! I believe that keeps up morale as well because they are a part of it all as well, they are making things happen and connections happen. It creates such great smaller community within our bigger Beauty Boost community!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Since I took over the city, our social media was already well-established but I knew I wanted to keep our followers engaged and continue to grow our online community! Staying consistent and active is such a big part of that! I believe that social media is an incredible tool to grow your community, your brand, and exposure but not something to drown in either! Keeping it simple is how I like to handle it and think about it. I love sharing photos and videos of our events with some information about who we are and why YOU should get involved with us. I like to think I provide some value and fun in sharing the experiences we put together! The Beauty Boost also has amazing women who create beautiful graphics and branding for us to use and share – I am so grateful for that because it is just not my forte yet!!
My advice to someone starting to build their online presence is to truly keep it simple and just post it if it’s relevant to your brand and true to what you are trying to put out there! Don’t overthink it and just be consistent so your audience and new eyes seeing your page know you are there!
