We caught up with the brilliant and insightful `Heather Orsak a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, `Heather thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
Being the owner of an event planning and production service company, we interact with a wide variety of people of all ages, going through different milestones in their lives. Each of their life milestones, whether if it is their wedding, a birthday party, retirement party, or even a funeral, these events are some of the most memorable days of our clients lives and we are 100% aware of the importance of the day. What sets my team apart from other companies is that we take these important days personally as well; we want the day to go perfectly for them because once they become our clients, they become family to us.
As my business grows, we are paving a legacy, a legacy that I hopes continues for generations. We meet couples when they are young and in puppy love, engagement and heading to marriage. It is so amazing to follow our couples throughout their lives after their wedding. We see them settle into a new home, have children, and celebrate their children’s life milestones. It gives me so much pride to be a part of the beginning of couples’ lives and then they share their life story with us after their wedding day.
I hope that couples share their wedding day story with others, their family, their children and that we are a part of that story; that we made their day perfect and will stay friends for life. That is what I hope to create as a legacy, an everlasting mark on my clients and couples lives where we assisted in one of the most important day in their lives and made it perfect.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Heather and I am the founder and owner of The Perfect Day LLC. I am born and raised in New Braunfels TX. I have a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Texas State University. I live in Canyon Lake with my husband Matthew and our 4 very large dogs and 2 cats. I enjoy red wine and dancing my tail feathers.
I started The Perfect Day when I was engaged sitting on the couch, drinking a bottle of wine, and wondering why I was planning a wedding all by myself. I realized… I NEED HELP. No one should have to plan their own wedding and this is where we come in. I started a full-service wedding and event coordination company. We have now grown into a premier event production company in the Texas Hill Country offering planning, coordination, rentals, florals, invitation design and printing, bartending, and officiating services.
NOW.. lets pop a bottle of wine and turn your vision into reality! Cheers!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
When I wanted to open my company, I busted out my college text books, yes that is right.. college text books. I graduated from Texas State University with a degree in Business Management. Re-reading these books with a business owner mindset was eye-opening and a great refresher. In addition to “going back to school”, I reached out to all the business owners I know that inspire me. My community is filled with amazing go getters and they are full of knowledge and willing to help. I reached out to multiple business owners to set up an in-person interview and I had positive responses. I met with business owners from all different types of businesses and discussed a wide array of topics including: start-up, business structure, finances, employees, unexpected issues, and even topics I didn’t think to ask about. It takes a village to build your empire and I have some amazing support.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
As The Perfect Day grew and we were booking more and more events and weddings, my team had to grow as well. Growing a team can be difficult, you post positions, you interview potential team members, and then you have to hope and use your best judgement that you are selecting the best candidate to join your team. My goal is not only to grow my team in numbers but to grow my team members in knowledge of the industry and help them grow as individuals. To maintain high morale and manage my team, I use the following:
1. Never believe you are the smartest person in the room. My employees come up with great ideas all the time and I open the floor for their ideas. I want them to voice their opinion, I want them to ask questions, and I want them to use their imagination. There is no limit to success you if you do not put up a ceiling.
2. This may sound taboo, but there is no “I” in team. My company would truly not be where it is at today without my team and I make sure to verbalize this to them. Constant encouragement and vocalizing when an employee does a good job can go a long way for a team member to feel appreciated.
3. Team building – We have a quarterly team outing to show my appreciation to the team. We have a great time out of the office and it’s so nice to watch the team become friends and just co-workers.
Always remember it takes a village to be amazing and you need to surround yourself with amazing team members.
