We recently connected with Heather Oliver and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Heather thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
When I started my business I was barely making four-figure months. Now, two years later, I’m closing out months that are five-times that. But, it didn’t happen overnight! It took a lot of hard work, long hours, and saying “yes” to the right opportunities. A lot of people will tell you to always say “yes.” I think that’s true to an extent; you should never undervalue yourself or your time for the sake of few extra dollars. When you hold out for the real opportunities, it will be so worth it. Granted, I’ve also scaled my rates accordingly as I’ve gained experience and a larger client load. Finding the right clients is key. When someone matches up with your process and you can see the end goal together, you know you’ll be able to go the distance together. The majority of my clients are referral based and I truly believe that’s the best review anyone could give me – to refer a friend!


Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the owner and head strategist behind Oliver and Co. Social, a boutique social media marketing agency. I started Oliver and Co. Social two years ago after working on both the brand and agency sides of marketing. I felt there was a need for al-a-carte social media marketing that was strategy-based, not solely based on an Instagram’s aesthetic. We work with each of our clients to create a wholistic strategy that aligns with overall business goals and focuses on multiple platforms. We offer monthly social media management packages that include a desired number of platforms and post frequency, as well as content creation through graphic design and product photography. We inform all strategy with social insights and metrics and track progress to individual brand goals through month-over-month reporting. Our ideal clients are female-owned small businesses who want to scale their businesses quickly and effectively.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We love treating our clients! The holidays are always a great time to make clients feel appreciated with a “thank you” gift for working together. We’ve done local deliveries of baked goods for clients in the area, and even done things like gift cards or gifting a virtual happy hour to clients further away. I always strive to make clients feel known and understood. Every small business is unique in its needs and challenges. What one client might need this week, is very different from what they needed last week, or what their neighbor needs next week. At a minimum, we have monthly meetings to check in on how goals are progressing and I enjoy asking for clear feedback throughout our relationship.


Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I recently started reading “Dream Big,” by Bob Goff and it’s been just the motivational kick I need to break down limiting beliefs I may have created for myself or the business. I think as a creative and a business owner it can be hard to balance setting goals and dreaming big with the reality of getting everything done. I’ve tried to implement check-ins to see where we’re progressing and where we may need to devote more time to reaching a goal for my own business. At the end of the day, I know that I have been blessed with every client and opportunity that comes my way and I am incredibly thankful for that! It’s all about ensuring I’m a good steward of the relationships we already have as well as the ones we’re fostering.
