Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Myers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Heather , thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Boy was I awkward when I first started out in television news. That is why rookie reporters get their start in small markets. We make all of our mistakes and work our way up. Trust me, I made a lot of mistakes. There was that time someone threw a donut out of a passing car and it hit me in the head while I was on live TV. (Thank God it was just a donut). But, I couldn’t recover and the liveshot was embarrassing. There were other times I forgot my own name, lost my train of thought on camera, and fumbled my way through an evening newscast. On camera skills don’t come naturally for most people. After more than two decades in broadcast news and with the development of technology, I know first hand the importance of coming across as a trustworthy source on camera. I am now using my skills of marketing, media, on-camera presence, storytelling, editing, videography and photography to show my clients homes in the best possible light. I realize that video in real estate is imperative and this is how we reach a huge audience of potential buyers. Most small businesses are realizing the importance of video and social media, but for some reason, real estate has been a little slower to adapt. I have a 12-step modernized media marketing approach to selling homes that is working and it’s unlike anything our competitors are doing. With the combination of technology, my decades of on-camera experience, a micro and macro approach to marketing and artificial intelligence, we are selling homes faster and for more money and our clients are thrilled. The truth is, behind the camera lens and lights is a story to tell about a house, so a potential buyer can envision their new home.
Heather , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Knocking on doors until one opens up. My name is Heather Myers and I am a 9-time Emmy winning TV news broadcaster in San Diego. There is a big misconception that this TV news business is all about lights and glam, makeup and microphones. The truth is, I worked my way up over the past 22 years at times making less than minimum wage, in small towns, knocking on doors while begging for interviews for a story in 115 degree heat. Over the course of two decades, God has opened up some amazing opportunities to keep me employed in this business, mostly in my hometown of San Diego, California. (which thank goodness, is not 115 degrees) I have interviewed thousands of fascinating people and covered some of the biggest local breaking news stories. Oh, and I have never had a makeup artist- ever. (No one does in this market) What I can say I do have is a curious mind. I like asking a lot of questions and digging for answers. I like helping people learn and grow. I also like to learn and grow. A few years ago, I started exclusively posting real estate content on my Instagram page. Instantly I could see how much people could relate to the high cost of living, the interest rates, the rent prices, the homes for sale, and the industry. The page has grown and now reaches millions per month. I feel like I am helping people understand the market, the potential and showcasing some beautiful homes.
My husband, Tyler Snyder, a San Diego based real estate broker, encouraged me to get my real estate license. So there I was again, knocking on yet another door, which God swung wide open. (There have been quite a few other doors that I’ve knocked on and tried to beat down that never opened up.) Now I continue to use my platform to post about real estate, local and nationally. Some of the best days on the job are when I get to tour some amazing homes. Now I use my decades long career in media and marketing to help people sell their homes. Through asking questions and learning, I like to tell the “story” about a house, because beyond the four walls, it’s the stories that make the house a home. My interest in video marketing, social media, and AI technology allows me to reach potential buyers of our listings in a whole new way. I never dreamed I would be not just knocking on doors in this way. And, I love opening them up and welcoming a new buyer in. Our brokerage is called The Snyder Real Estate Group and we are based in San Diego County.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I assumed that because I was on television in people’s living rooms everyday, it might help to build a social media presence- WRONG! I have realized there is no shortcut to building a social media page. I refuse to pay for followers because I don’t believe in that. My growth has come from consistent, new content, every day, over the course of months, if not years. That strategy has helped me grow a humble following. I simply refuse to give up. In real estate, many agents don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera. However, gone are the days of being “camera shy”. You just have to do it, and do it again, and again. And when you don’t feel like posting, you post again. People hold their phones 6 inches from their face and listen to what you have to say. There is no better audience to speak to- and everyone has something to say.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building a reputation is something I take very serious. After more than two decades on television news, I have worked so hard to have a great reputation. For me and my husband, integrity is everything. It’s doing the right thing even when it’s tough and even when no one is looking. Being open and honest with our clients is at the top of our list. I am used to the fast pace of television news. I believe in getting back to people right away, always being accessible, and not dodging tough conversations. While my husband is a seasoned real estate broker, I am building my reputation one deal at a time. The ultimate compliment is when our client refers a new client to us. There is no greater feeling than that.
