We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Mulhollan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

Being a business owner was never something I thought I would do. I had always had full-time employment in the corporate world and was also a professional singer, but I honestly never felt truly fulfilled. I always felt there was something missing that I should be doing something more with my life. That all started to change when I had my first Reiki session back in 2012. It truly opened my eyes to a whole new way of existence. But still, while I truly enjoyed receiving Reiki and learning more about holistic wellness, I still had no aspirations of opening my own business.

That all changed when I discovered that Reiki could be used to help animals. I had always had a huge heart for animals and when I discovered this healing modality could be used to help them I just knew with every fiber of my being that is what I was missing in my life. I started my Reiki training in 2014 and went all the way up to the Master/Teacher level for both humans and animals. Along the way, as I was learning Reiki, I discovered other holistic healing modalities that could also be used to help animals and decided to learn as much as I could. So in addition to Reiki, I took animal communication training, got certified in canine and feline massage therapy, and took wildlife rehabilitation and wildlife conservation courses. The more I learned, the more the thought kept coming into my mind to open my own business. Then COVID happened and everything came to a halt. But I decided to use the lockdown to my advantage and used that time to create my business, and on August 29, 2020 Fairhaven Healing was officially opened.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Sure! My name is Heather Mulhollan and I live in Central Pennsylvania with my husband, one rescue dog, two rescue cats, a ton of fish, and several wild animals that I care for. I am a Usui Reiki Master, Animal Reiki Master/Teacher, Canine and Feline Massage Therapist, Animal Communicator, Psychic/Medium, and Wildlife Conservationist.

Through my business, Fairhaven Healing, I offer Reiki, as well as other energy healing modalities for people and all species of pets, canine and feline massage therapy services and animal communication services. Additionally, I also teach Reiki classes and workshops on Wildlife Conservation, Monarch Butterfly Conservation, and host several special events that help people connect to the earth and to our wildlife. I am also a permitted wildlife rescuer with the Pennsylvania Game Commission and am out in the field working hands-on with our local wildlife. I use my field experience to teach people how to coexist with wildlife and how to better appreciate the diversity of life on our planet.

My business is still growing and expanding. I still have a lot of ideas and goals that I am working towards. My ultimate goal for Fairhaven Healing is to have it be a place of healing for animals of all species, as well as a place where people can connect with the animals in their lives on a deeper level and allow them to form a deeper connection with all of the species that call our planet home.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.

My clients are so important to me and keeping them happy is my ultimate priority as a small business owner. One thing I do is I always follow-up with my new clients after their first session with me just to see how they are feeling and to give them an opportunity to ask any questions if anything has come up for them. I also have a mailing list and send out quarterly newsletters that contain fun wildlife facts, updates about Fairhaven Healing, as well as any events that I have coming up.

Another thing I do every December is send out special holiday cards to all of my clients. In the card I include a special discount that can be used at a future appointment. I found this not only shows my clients how much I appreciate their business, but also helps with returning clients.

For my Reiki students, I have created a private Facebook page where they can connect with other students and ask any questions. I also have quarterly Reiki student meet-ups where we all get together, share a meal, and practice Reiki on each other. It is so important to have support when you start on your Reiki journey and I want to give all of my students a safe place where they can feel supported in their Reiki journey.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

Building a presence on social media is so important for any business owner in this day and age. It’s a great way to connect with potential clients and it’s free promotion for your business.

I use my social media platforms to advertise my services, promote my events, and also to share relevant information pertaining to all of the many things I do. The one rule I do follow though is to not post too much in one day. I found out if you post multiple things in a day it’s overkill and your audience may not see everything you posted. I try to stick to only posting one item a day.

Another thing I started doing this year, and this has helped grow my social media following substantially, is to do a special post every Monday. I call these posts “Magickal Monday” posts and do a different oracle card pull each week.  It’s like a free mini reading for everyone and people seem to really enjoy it.

I truly enjoy connecting with people over social media. Not only is it a chance to meet potential clients, but I’ve also been able to network with all kinds of different people who I may not have met had it not been for social media. I believe that as a small business owner, having a social media presence is really important.
