We were lucky to catch up with Heather Mueller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From an early age, I’ve been captivated by the world of the arts. My journey began with my mother, an artist herself, as we created art together—a bond that deepened my love for creative expression. Dance also played a significant role in my upbringing, leading me to perform with the Fresno Ballet Company. Being part of productions like The Nutcracker and various story ballets was an enchanting experience that further fueled my artistic passion.
It was in high school, however, that I truly discovered my calling as an artist. Under the guidance of my inspiring art teacher, Mr. Hawks, I explored the realms of painting, drawing, and screen printing. His class opened a gateway to a world where creativity knew no bounds, and I was utterly hooked. Creating art became my sanctuary—a magical portal where I could channel my imagination and breathe life into ideas that had never existed before. The process of crafting something new brought me immense joy and serenity, as I reveled in the limitless possibilities that art offered.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I graduated from San Francisco Stare University with a BA in fine arts. After working various jobs and showcasing my art in local cafes, I decided to return to school to pursue graphic design. Upon graduating, I was fortunate to land a role as a web production artist at West Elm, followed by positions at art agencies in San Francisco.
When I took a break to start my family, I received my first iPad as a gift from my husband, and began teaching myself Procreate. This marked a turning point in my creative journey. I discovered my passion for hand lettering after taking a class and soon after launched my Instagram art account, @heatherslettering. Through a 100-day project and various passion projects, I honed my skills, taking workshops and classes on Skillshare to elevate my craft. What began as a focus on hand lettering naturally evolved into a love for illustration across a wide range of subjects, and surface pattern design for products.
I attended design and lettering conferences, and actively engaged in events to connect with other artists. This led to forming a close-knit group of creatives, with whom I began hosting drawing challenges on Instagram. These experiences deepened my connection to the art community, where I find immense joy in meeting fellow creatives and supporting emerging artists along the way. Last year I launched my first Skillshare class all about hand lettering and composition for illustrators.
I provide commercial illustration, hand lettering, and surface pattern designs to brands for packaging, editorial, and art licensing. I’ve also hand painted a mural and signage for local businesses in my area. I have over 15 years of art, design, & illustration experience. With a unique recognizable style; I create meaningful illustrations for clients, that bring value by helping their brands stand out, with expressive letterforms and powerful messaging.
My creative process is inspired by nature, life experiences, music, storytelling, and vintage typography. I embrace an organic and playful style, characterized by dynamic movement, vibrant colors, and intricate floral elements. I adore all things plants and magic. Drawing influence from the natural world around me, I aim to infuse each project with a sense of wonder and excitement.
Being an artist requires determination, consistency, and tenacity. Reflecting on my journey, I’m amazed at how far I’ve come over the years, yet I still fee like I’m just getting started. I’m always finding new challenges to overcome, art mediums to explore, and amazing people to work and collaborate with. I’ve worked with brands such as Adobe, Skillshare, Blue Star Press, West Elm, Botanicalife, Salt & Sea Kauaii, Arthouse & Co., Wild as Heck, & more. What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Fair compensation and economic support for artists ensures that artists are fairly compensated for their work. This includes advocating for fair pay in commissions, and exhibitions, as well as providing economic support such as tax incentives, healthcare benefits, and retirement plans tailored for artists.
Creating platforms that foster collaboration and mentorship among artists can help them grow professionally and creatively. Networking events, artist collectives, and mentorship programs can connect emerging artists with more experienced professionals, providing guidance, inspiration, and opportunities for collaboration. I’ve co-founded the Oh La La Collective with Melissa Donne and Carole Hillman which is a surface pattern design community on Instagram. The collective provides a chance for up and coming artists to be featured on our Instagram page; https://www.instagram.com/ohlalacollective/. We also do LIVE chats to answer questions and offer advice for artists just starting out in art licensing. The collective is new, but we plan to bring many more resources to artists over time and hope to create a bustling community of artists where people can connect and support each other.
Strengthening art education in schools and communities fosters a deeper appreciation for the arts from a young age. Advocacy for the importance of arts in society, including through public campaigns and partnerships with cultural institutions, can elevate the status of artists and encourage broader support for creative endeavors. I hope to see more support for art is schools in the future.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to connect with others through the power of storytelling, creating art that resonates and leaves a lasting impact. Art transcends boundaries, offering a universal language that can convey hope, inspire change, and foster a sense of connection. As Gerhard Richter wisely said, “Art is the highest form of hope,” a sentiment that deeply resonates with me.
Artists hold a unique and powerful position in society, with the ability to channel positivity, hope, and change through their work. They can amplify important themes, such as mental health, environmental protection, and social justice, using their creativity to advocate for causes that matter. Art becomes not just a form of self-expression, but a tool for raising awareness, inspiring dialogue, and nurturing a sense of community.
In a world often filled with challenges, artists have the profound opportunity to be beacons of light, using their craft to share hope and encourage others to see the beauty and potential in life. This ability to make a difference, to touch hearts and minds, is what makes being an artist so deeply fulfilling.
