We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather McKeown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’d like to think I always wanted to pursue fashion. From drawing up sketches as a young child to using my grand mothers dish towels to produce garments and other accessories. I always admired the way how so many people like my aunt, mom and grandmother sewed. It wasn’t until my aunt presented me the opportunity to produce my first costume that I fell in love with sewing and fashion in general. I’ve always loved it such a young age and am privileged to be able to express and enjoy my passion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a bespoke seamstress and designer that specializes in costumes. I really enjoy making one of a kind pieces with a variety of fabrics, trims and unique details. I love drafting my own patterns and original designs for costumes and am ready to produce a perfect piece for my clients. I am most proud of the costumes I’ve added my original flare on because I feel they are set apart from othe costumes and tell a unique story about th character and helps tell their story from clothing. I really believe in ethical and sustainable clothing that will last a while.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There are a ton of resources out there for people wanting to learn how to sew such as books, online tutorials, workshops/classes and conventions. I wish I knew about a lot of these resources early on! You can learn quite a bit about sewing and techniques from free resources out there!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As much as I’d like to say it’s about the journey and not the destination, it is absolutely refreshing to finish a piece and step back to admire it. To see all the unique features and designs I added to a specific garment. It’s so rewarding to be able to say a product was made by me and it is a really great feeling when the client loves the piece.
