We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Lynn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heather , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I have always been a creative. However- a creative who had to pay her own way since she was 18 years old- funding both college and law school myself. This led me away from my passion and into jobs that paid the bills. However I continued to be a “maker” on the side in multiple mediums but would just give my time and talent to my love ones for free. It wasnt until my youngest daughter contracted a life threatening infection in mexico and had to be put on life support and transported via helicopter to our local Childrens Hospital that things began to change in my creative journey. My daughter thnakfully is healthy today but at the time in 2014 she died in front of me and had to be paddled back to life. She spent weeks in the PICU on life support. To thank the hospital that saved her life I painted 5 large paintings- a mural of this journey – and I donated them to the hospital. The CEO at the time placed them outside his personal office and that was when things started to change. My phone started ringing asking if they could buy them and if not would I create something custom? I took a big risk and started saying YES. I built a business and a LCC- rented outside studio space and poured myself into my new (but old) passion to “make”. I worked tirelessly building, creatinv and marketing. My business took off and has been thriving ever since. Today I am an internationally awarded, selling and represented artist who sells 50-80 pieces a year both commercially and residentially.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What makes my art practice unique is I have created something that has not been done before. I use crystals stones and recycled glass in my work BUT without using any resin glue or toxins. It was a bit of a chemistry experiment to perfect but i was successful! Its amazing to make something that didnt exist before and he able to share it with the world.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I am so thankful to social media. Specifically instagram. I could not have built my business without it. I have been exposed to some many other artists, businesses and galleries that have helped propell my career. I am forever grateful for this amazing online community
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Putting myself out there. Joining lots of local and national organizations. Showing up at art shows and putting myself and work out there. But also going within myself to put in the energy and time to come up with new series and new ideas within my craft. Being truly authentic to my practice and my brand.
