We recently connected with Heather Kemp and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
The legacy I hope to leave behind is my kids. I hope I am teaching them to be better people through my own actions. While I am passionate about what I do, I don’t expect them to also be passionate about childbirth. I just hope that I am showing them that they can pursue whatever they are passionate about. They can chase after their dreams while also treating others kindly and with respect. I hope that long after I am gone my children are still out there trying to make the world a better and kinder place for everyone. My dream is they are are also teaching their children someday through their actions. My hope is to have even the smallest dent in helping to create a bright and positive future.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a mother to 5. I had my first 3 children in a hospital setting and was very dissatisfied with my multitude of experiences. I felt like I knew what my body needed from me, but I was not allowed to do what felt right. I gave birth to my last 2 children in my home. While home birth may not be right for everyone, it was the support I had that made the biggest difference and the ability to trust myself. I became a stay at home mom during my 4th pregnancy. After her birth, I supported a few people during their labors in the role of a doula. I decided to start my business as Gemini Birth Services in order to support more people during their labor processes. I also realized that with the training I received and my own experiences I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my knowledge. Knowing what some of the things you may experience during labor and how to handle them helps to give clients a sense of safety, rather than the fear of the unknown. While I still love to be able to support laboring couples, I have found I am most passionate about teaching childbirth classes, as well as a grandparents class that helps the new grandparents understand the options now available and why a couple may choose to do things in ways they may not understand. I also offer in-home placenta processing services for those who choose to have their placenta encapsulated. One of my most useful services is postpartum doula. So many new parents feel lost when they bring their new baby home and no longer have nurses, family, or friends around to help. I am able to help with some basic chores while they are able to get some much needed rest. I also can help with baby care, questions, breastfeeding assistance, and so much more. I am very proud of the relationships I build with my clients. Most of my clients choose to stay in contact with me long after my services are needed. We become a part of each other’s stories in a beautiful way.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for finding clients in my line of work is word of mouth referrals. I make connections with doctors, chiropractors, and hospitals, but the best connections I make are with my own clients. When they share their experiences and stories with others and mention my support, that is the best review I can receive.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Less than 2 years after my 5th child was born my family received life altering news. My kids and I had to start new with just us as their father is no longer involved in their lives. In the next year and a half I lost my brother, my father, and Covid stopped the world. I not only managed to learn how to be a single mom while continuing to provide support others, but also uprooted my family and moved across the country to an area where we knew no one. While leaving Illinois to move to Colorado was scary, it has been the best decision. My children and I no longer feel like we are in survival mode, but rather are thriving here. I am so excited to get my business back off the ground and start supporting and educating families in Colorado.
