We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Hansen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I believe our differences can be our strengths, and that’s certainly true for me. For 25 years I was a trial attorney, and that’s a very logical, concrete and conscious job. But I’m also a certified hypnotist, which is very intuitive and focused on the subconscious. I teach people how to build beliefs by combining the tools of an attorney with the tools of a hypnotist. This is not the norm for either field, but the perfect combination for me and my clients. Life is full of tension and duality, and recognizing that can be very beneficial

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My life’s work is to give people the tools to overcome doubts, build beliefs, and turn their adversaries into advocates. I’ve combined my experience as a trial attorney with my psychology degree, dispute resolution training, and TV experience to create tools anyone can use to advocate for their ideas, products, and services and collect their wins. Then, I recently added the subconscious tools of a hypnotist, and things got really interesting.
I was a host at the Law and Crime Network and have appeared on
The Today Show, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and CBS. I’ve worked with Harvard Business School, Stanford MedX, Google, LVMH, Sav A Tree, Bimbo Bakery, and the American Medical Association, among others.
My book “The Elegant Warrior: How to Win Life’s Trials Without Losing Yourself” was an Amazon best seller and Publisher’s Weekly called it “a template for achieving life and career goals”. My second book is Advocate to Win-10 Tools to Ask for What Your Want and Get It. I’m the host of The Elegant Warrior podcast, which is consistently in the top 100 business podcasts on Apple.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn doubt. I teach people how to build beliefs, but in the courtroom, I also had to think of how I could be cross-examined. I had to find all the holes in my argument to address them. While that skill does still serve me, it can also lead to hesitation, analysis paralysis and worse. I’ve had to balance my ability to see and address the problems with a strong belief in my ability to overcome them

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients is my current clients. They serve as wonderful evidence that what I teach works. So whether they’re providing testimonials, making introductions or simply out in the world putting our work into action, they’re creating new clients wherever they go.
