We were lucky to catch up with Heather Grace Hancock recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather Grace, thanks for joining us today. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?

Myself. Hands down.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m an actor, I’ve always been an actor, but when the pandemic shut my industry down in 2020, I somehow landed in the world of Reiki healing. I now have my own business, Reiki Healing with Grace, where I offer remote 1:1 sessions, 1:2 sessions, pet sessions, group classes, and lots of other really cool offerings like my Moon Magick classes, which are my favorite.

The drive for my Reiki business comes from my own experience with severe trauma and I wanted to help others release and heal from theirs the way Reiki significantly helped me heal from mine. I always say that Reiki is a great option at the wellness buffet where we can mix allopathic and alternative medicine. Go to acupuncture. Get annual blood work. Take your meds. Go to Reiki. There’s no one path to being and feeling like your most whole and healed self.

What sets me apart is that I’m a straightforward, tattooed, swear-prone Reiki Master who wholeheartedly loves this work and approaches it with both the woo-woo and the physics, something that I was desperately searching for when I was seeking out practitioners. Reiki is a young field of science, but it has all kinds of research to back it up, and quantum physics is literally my favorite thing in the world. I’m a realist; I want to know the how.

My proudest achievement is being a female, queer, small business owner running a successful venture entirely by myself and entirely on my own terms. But the greatest gift this work has given me is my amazing clients and the opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives. They will share with me the most extraordinarily touching and kind sentiments and it is just unspeakably moving. Being a part of someone’s healing journey is a tremendous honor and it adds profound meaning to my life. I could not be more grateful.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

Easily 90% of my clients come from word-of-mouth referrals, and the only way that happens is when you’re really aligned. Aligned with yourself, which to me means finding your authenticity, self-love, and self-worth, and putting your energy into work that is also in alignment with that frequency. The general idea behind owning your own business is that, yes, it’s work, but it’s work that ignites your passion and fills you up inside. I approach this work with the reverence and dedication that it deserves, and I absolutely love every aspect of it. All of this makes me more effective as a practitioner, and it shows in the benefits my clients are seeing and experiencing.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Literally everything. Everything I was taught by my parents, society, culture, religion, politics—question everything, deconstruct everything. Be brave enough to push back on everything you believe and everything you think. Ask the hard questions. I harp so much on authenticity because for me, that has been the most healing, most rewarding, and most joyful part of my own wellness journey. “Hard-won” doesn’t even begin to cover it, and I think it’s a lifelong pursuit, but once you tap into your true self and start honoring and loving that self—all bets are on the table in the best way possible. I never experienced a moment of flow, delight, or self-actualization until I started to tap into that energy. Unlearn everything, take off all your identities, erase all your stories, and then rebuild with what survives this deconstruction and watch what happens. It’s the hardest and most magnificent thing you’ll ever do.
