We were lucky to catch up with Heather Gillis recently and have shared our conversation below.

Heather, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.

My first real tour experience was with Butch Trucks (Allman Brothers Band). Butch loved improvised music and taking risks. He taught me how to really listen and be in the moment on stage. He believed that taking chances is what keeps live music real and interesting. Some nights we would really be going for something and the song would just kind of fall apart. AND HE WOULD LOVE IT. He’d talk about it for days. It would be the highlight of the tour. Because it was real and we were challenging ourselves and not phoning in some over rehearsed idea of how the song is “suppose” to sound.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I am an artist based out of Nashville, TN. I release original music under the name “Wolf Twin”. I also work with other people playing guitar, bass, singing or songwriting. I am a visual artist and sell paintings at my shows.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

Be the best version of myself I can be. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

Growing up I heavily placed my identity in being a guitar player and trying to be the best guitar player. However, in the past 5 years or so I have tried to not identify myself with specific labels. I want to make art, however possible. Singing, painting, photography, music, fashion. It’s all art and its all creating. I’m just trying to have fun.
