Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Gibbs . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Heather , appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I started my business four years ago virtually when the pandemic happened. Two years after virtual that I opened a gym suite. it wasn’t a positive environment for me, so I decided in the middle of the night at 12 o’clock in the morning that I wanted to venture off and have a bigger location with less then a year time span I found new location. It will be my one year anniversary since I’ve been in my new location on June 5. I went from having one on one to three members Max in my old location because of space now I’m able to have 11 members and probably more, but my program is small group personal training , I truly wish I would’ve started my own business. i’m going to probably say five years into personal training. It has been an adventure to work at different locations and not be appreciated as a trainer specially, a woman trainer, and a man industry when I started versus now. I’m gonna say it’s easy owning a business. I do run it, I do all my classes all by myself, I am the owner, the HR and the coach. It’s also not easy being an ethnic woman and a woman running a business but with awesome work ethics, a great clientele. I have been super successful so far. I have kept a positive head on my shoulders and this is what helped me through my journey.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Im Heather Michelle.. I started my journey in 2000. I was 205 pounds after having my daughter who is now 23 going on 24 next month in June. I saw a photo of myself wasn’t happy with what I saw and decided to join Weight Watchers lost 55 pounds in a year. Fast-forward to 3 years and I decided that I want to be a personal trainer because I fell in love with Fitness. I have had a couple of setbacks in my fitness journey. So I can say when it comes to my style of training, I can relate to a lot of my members, I’m also honest trainer. I’m not gonna sell you a dream that’s not reality. I am passionate when it comes to health and fitness and for all my life struggles. The gym has something that has always helped me mentally, and that is something that I tell my members and they know this. My discipline just comes from being a single mother and being a hustler as much as I hate that word that is what got me disciplined. It’s not motivation, it’s not determination. Fitness is a lifestyle mentally before physically. when it comes to products I use 1st Phorm supplements I also retail them in my gym. I’m also a vegetarian. It will be seven years since I became a vegetarian. I suffer from severe migraines, and the doctor wanted to prescribe me with all kinds of medication. I decided to try it my way and stop eating meat a month and into giving up meat , I stopped having migraines. When it comes to my brand, I always tell my members as mother, a wife, husband, boyfriend, friend etc. you always put everybody first before your needs. It only takes 30 to 45 minutes to put your health and yourself 1st . Because at the end of the day, if you don’t put you first, who’s gonna do it for you?
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source for clientele is referrals. Referral programs if you’re good at what you do and your passionate people will refer you.
I also use social media as marketing and I post my members once in a while I’ll post a video talking to members. But it’s been before and after photos, or videos of my members talking or just working out.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started saving money when I was 22 years old. I was a hairstylist and still am. I made great money in the salon Six figures a year and my mother bless her heart told me to save money. I use that money to start my business. I reached out to another gym owner and asked her for advice to expanding my gym, and the advice she told me was gradually add things to your business and don’t spend it all at once. Best advice I had.
