We were lucky to catch up with Heather Gappi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our mission is empowering women of all walks of life. I think all women should feel beautiful no matter their size, color, or ethnicity. There are so many stereotypes in this world and I don’t want my clients to feel the way I did growing up.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been in this industry for about 10 years now and I had to start from the ground up, which was hard, but it feels great knowing how much I have accomplished. I love this industry so much and seeing clients’ reactions of excitement from how I made them look and feel makes everything I do so worth it. Nothing feels better than knowing I can tell someone’s story through their session; we can still have fun keeping it light and professional. It is not work for me, it is an escape to my own world and allows me to be creative while learning and creating bonds from those who come to me. We spent the last 9 years collecting amazing gowns, newborn props, and accessories for clients to use and create new memories that stand apart from other companies. Sometimes it is hard because everyone has a different lens they see from. I may see a beautiful yellow, but someone else might see a turquoise. Learning what my client wants versus what they say has been the biggest learning curve for me. I treat clients the way I would want to be treated, we are all different and we are all in different walks of life, so you must keep that in mind.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
A lot of people do not understand that I am extremely good at multi-tasking, so I work at a fast pace and get a lot done. A few clients who are not familiar with our work have mentioned how they have felt rushed and did not feel like they got a lot of pictures. However, once they see how many pictures they did get, they are surprised! I always tell people, I am fast, but I am efficient. I like to focus on quality versus quantity because you would rather have that one showstopper photo, rather than hundreds of the same photo.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I meet a lot of different people everyday who are on their own journey. I get to listen and learn from so many amazing people and their wisdom has truly has changed my life. I get the opportunity to tell their stories and capture the small intimate moments that people don’t normally get to see.
