We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Fox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I began my journey as a self-taught makeup artist, honing my skills and showcasing my work on Instagram. It was during this time that I caught the attention of a professional makeup artist, @Novamakeupandhair, who extended an invitation for me to work alongside her. Initially, I hesitated to accept this opportunity, plagued by self-doubt regarding my artistry. However, upon reconsideration, I embraced the chance to embrace my inner makeup artist, and it has profoundly transformed my life ever since. She really took me in as a mentor and showed me everything I know.
Reflecting upon my experiences, I have come to appreciate the value of patience as an indispensable skill for a makeup artist. Allowing myself to make mistakes and learn from them is an essential skill for any makeup artist. I have personally encountered instances where I became my own obstacles, getting in the way of my progress. Although the journey of a makeup artist may occasionally present intimidating challenges when working with clients, the consistent practice of makeup application and dedicated study of the art of beauty can lead to remarkable growth. Embracing this profession has empowered me to overcome obstacles and emerge as a confident makeup artist. I firmly believe that the path to excellence lies in embracing both the challenges and the triumphs that come with this craft.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Under the guidance and mentorship of Amanda (@novamakeupandhair), I underwent a real mua boot-camp training that truly shaped me into a professional makeup artist. Observing her techniques, absorbing knowledge, and graciously accepting critiques significantly enhanced my skills as an artist. While I offer various makeup styles, it is in the editorial makeup where I truly flourish.
What sets me apart from my peers in this industry is the customer experience that I provide for the client. Building genuine connections and establishing friendships with my clients is very important. By attentively listening to their needs, preferences, and dislikes, I am able to connect with them and achieve their vision they have. Being entrusted with their personal stories, dreams, and insecurities creates a bond built on trust and vulnerability. This unique relationship allows me to create a safe and comfortable space where clients can freely express themselves and explore their desired looks.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a makeup artist is the transformation power it holds. Witnessing the impact that makeup can have on someones confidence and self-esteem is truly fulfilling. By enhancing natural features or creating artistic looks, I have the privilege of helping people feel beautiful, empowered, and ready to conquer the world.
