We recently connected with Heather Finks and have shared our conversation below.
Heather, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I grew up in a low-income household by my father who raised my brother and I by himself. Success was not something that was easily recognized by our family. At the age of 14, I became pregnant with my daughter. Life was no longer about me. I did not want to be a statistic destined to fail. Being a teenage mother fueled my desire to escape from the cycle of deprivation generations of my family had faced before me. It was a tangible motivation coupled with an innate entrepreneurial spirit that drove me to start my own company at the age of 22. In 2015, I started The Browtini Bar. We were one of the very first establishments to offer the newest form of cosmetic tattooing in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. It was a one man show operating out of an obstetrician office. Funny combination, right? I thought so too, but it was a beautiful beginning to an endeavor that has grown exponentially since. In 2020, I thought it was fitting to replace the name with House of Beauty to accommodate the ever expanding services we provide. As of today, House of Beauty is home to several technicians trained in various services including injectables, facials, brow/lash services, and more.
Looking back, I would not have done anything differently. As a matter of fact, the challenges I faced were all learning opportunities which helped me to grow with each new business I started thereafter.
Advice I would give to others considering opening up a business is to just do it. The hardest part is overcoming your fear and self-doubt. Write down your plan and execute.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Heather Finks. I wish I could say I was a Fort Worth native, but I can tell you I got here as fast as I can! I am an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner, mother, entrepreneur, and friend.
I got into aesthetics by the grace of God. I was looking for a position where I could exercise my creativity, independence, and medical skill set- aesthetics has allowed me to do just that. Being the owner and aesthetic provider of House of Beauty is truly my dream job and I feel so blessed.
House of Beauty is home to several services geared toward helping you look and feel your absolute best in the most natural way possible. Our services include injectables, brow services, lash services, facials, permanent makeup, and more. Our intention is to provide non-surgical aesthetic treatments with a natural-beauty driven focus. We believe it is our own unique features in combination with inner beauty that truly make us beautiful.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Growing up, I was always told I would never succeed in life. This happened a lot more frequently after having my daughter at 15 years old. I was told I would “just be another statistic”. Comments like these only added fuel to my desire to be successful. I always tell colleagues, there will always be people who doubt you on your journey to succeed. I feel like the more successful I became, the more negative people I encountered. I found motivation in the doubt and feel it led to my resiliency. I believe people who speak negatively about your successful are only facing their own internal battles. When you look at it in that perspective, you can use it as a powerful source for drive and motivation.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I was always a yes man. If a client needed a Saturday, I would come in on Saturday. If a client reached out to me after hours, I would immediately respond. After some time of overextended my self, I became pretty burnt out and unhappy. I had to learn to have boundaries to protect my work life balance. I learned that once you have those boundaries in place, clients will continue coming to you and you will feel better able to do your job with less stress and more peace.
