We were lucky to catch up with Heather Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heather , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
As a professional dancer over 50, I thought that I had “aged out” of taking classes and performing. My body and abilities had changed over the years, especially after having three children. But I still had this desire to dance and had always wanted to take a heels class. During the pandemic, I took one over Zoom and was instantly hooked. I soon mustered up the courage to try one in person. It was challenging for me, being the oldest in a room of young dancers and trying to move my body in ways that I hadn’t done in years. Bending, turning and floor work had my body saying, “girl, you sure you want to do this?”. But my mind and my soul loved it! I left that class feeling sexy, inspired and empowered. I had stepped out of my comfort zone and stepped into a new kind of power. It was exhilarating!
Having taught dance for years in my life before marriage and kids, I knew that this style of dance was something I wanted to share with other women. But, I wanted to make it available to ALL women….at any age/stage of their lives and for any level. I knew that I needed to share this experience so they too could feel sexy and alive! And so, Lotus Dance Flow was born.
I am most proud of the inclusive environment that Lotus Dance Flow offers. I have have women in their 20’s through 70’s attend. Watching the incredible beauty in women coming together, all at different seasons in their lives, and cheering for each other and supporting each other is truly magical. I love helping them step out of their comfort zones to try something new – literally blooming in front of my eyes. We are all part of the symbolism of the lotus. Coming out of the dark and muddy waters with the challenges life can throw us, and blooming anyway. It is an honor to watch these women release, let go and flow in our divine feminine gatherings.
Heather , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Heather Evans. I am a dancer and creator of Lotus Dance Flow. I danced professionally for over 20 years with various companies, shows and NBA teams before taking on my most rewarding role of wife and mother of 3 teens. As my children started growing up and I began my journey into mid-life, I realized that dance was still very much a part of my soul and something I was missing. I had been a Zumba instructor for over 12 years, but wanted to get back into the studio and choreograph, create and teach again. So, I developed the kind of class that I wanted to take – heels dancing for any age and level.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that women over the age of 30 are too old to keep taking dance classes and performing. Ageism is real, especially in the dance world, and I bought into it until I was in my late 40’s. It wasn’t until I stepped out of my own comfort zone and proved to myself that I had a place in a class with 18-25 year olds, that I learned that age truly is just a number, and we should never let it stop us from making our dreams a reality.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Social media, and creating videos/reels to post was a game changer for me. Once women started seeing videos from Lotus Dance Flow of other women stepping out of their comfort zones, they found the courage to come and try it for themselves. Through social media, women from all over see firsthand how empowered they can feel in my classes, and they want that for themselves. It’s like an invitation they didn’t know they needed. And I’m so proud of them and this incredible sisterhood my company has encouraged.
