Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Domer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Heather thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It was Fall of 2016 after a year of doing donation based sessions for fun and experience, I had a co-worker ask me to capture her wedding. At that time I was scared and told her that I have never done a wedding before. She put her trust in me and I captured her special day – I fell in love with weddings! It was then and there that I decided I wanted to start a business and capture primarily weddings and strive for a full time professional career as a wedding photographer. I just loved serving and capturing a day that is so meaningful to me as well as my couples. From capturing the details, the first looks, ceremony, the celebration at the reception. Getting to be that person to help curate a day that they are dreaming of and collaborating with an amazing wedding team is truly inspiring to me. And delivering beauty in a bright, clean, crisp way fuels my creative self.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

After 7+ years, I have decided to extend a helping hand to photographers that have found their place of excitement and love of wedding photography with education. I’m so proud to offer workshops, educational style shoots, and personal branding.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting to capture kind couples and their families on one of the best days of their lives and they get to relive their moments in a beautiful display. And seeing my clients share and display these moments on social and in their homes.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn is comparison. It’s something that can eat you up inside as a creative. My first few years I always compared my work to others and focused on being more like them to be successful. Once I unlearned that a whole new focus came to light and that is freedom. Freedom to do your own thing, freedom to strive to your own goals and success. Striving to be different than everyone else and when you let others that share the same views into your life something ignites. It ignited my creative vision for where I wanted my business to go. In a unique and amazing way that encourages community over competition.
