We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Cohen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Heather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I think the best way to learn is experience. I started building my business a few years before actually becoming an official business owner on the job learning. I think it takes time to build relationships and learn the industry. I was eager to start, passionate about event planning and loved how this process allowed me to use my creativity.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I always loved planning, especially when it comes to details and a “WOW” factor. I really got interested in planning events when I get married in 1999. I always knew that I loved helping people and now I get to help people celebrate milestones in the best way possible. I started with small events and built up from there. First, birthday parties, graduation parties and then moved forward to mitzvahs and weddings. I think that HLC Party Planning & Consulting is different because I take the time to get to know each and every client and family. I really take a deep dive to make sure every detail is met. I strive to make each event special and unique, fit within the budget and wishes of the host. I am most proud when the family/client is happy with an event or weekend that I have helped plan and make every dream come true.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
HLC Party Planning & Consulting’s goal is to make sure that every event runs smoothly, efficiently and every guest/host has a stress-free and fantastic event. That is what motivates my daily. Getting to know a family and really understanding the drive and dreams is what fills me up with motivation, creativity to help and to assist with coordinating events.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Early on in my business I had a client that asked for help with ordering shirts for a fundraiser. I learned the hard way that it is always good to trust your own instincts. They refused to pay a deposit and I mistakenly was too trusting. It’s important to know your worth and stand up to what is fair. I would tell anyone to trust yourself and spend time to build the relationships. That is the best way to conduct a business in a space like event planning.
