Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Bostick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Heather, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
Couples today seek to create unforgettable experiences for their wedding guests, and flowers play a crucial role in making a lasting impression. One notable trend is the growing demand for eco-conscious weddings, where couples are opting for sustainable options in floral design. This includes using eco-friendly floral techniques, locally grown flowers, and composting floral waste to reduce the environmental impact of their wedding.
To create a memorable ambiance, couples look for unique focal installations that provide a “wow” factor. Eco-conscious tools such as chicken wire and biodegradable foam create stunning installations that leave a lasting impression on guests.
Another trend is the embrace of diverse color palettes, particularly using seasonal blooms. This allows couples to create a more personalized experience for themselves and their guests. While guests may not remember every detail of the food or drinks, they will remember the overall ambiance of the wedding, making these unique floral choices all the more impactful.
Overall, couples are seeking to create weddings that are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly and personalized, making the floral choices an essential part of their wedding planning process.
Flowers can indeed be a significant expense in a wedding budget. As couples look for ways to manage costs and deal with the limitations of certain blooms, they may consider alternatives like faux flowers. However, faux flowers can be as costly as fresh ones and have a larger carbon footprint compared to seasonal and local blooms.
Several options are available for couples determined to include specific blooms like peonies, which are seasonal and have a limited availability window. They can select a wedding date during the peony season, typically in late spring through summer. Alternatively, they can choose to pay a premium for imported flowers.
While efforts are made to be environmentally friendly, such as using local and seasonal blooms, it’s important to recognize that there is still an environmental impact due to transportation and water use in the floral
industry. Transportation of flowers, even locally sourced ones, contributes to carbon emissions, especially if they are not transported efficiently. Additionally, the water-intensive nature of flower cultivation can strain local water resources, especially in regions where water scarcity is a concern. Despite these challenges, there are ways to mitigate these impacts, such as choosing more sustainable transportation options and implementing water-efficient irrigation techniques.
Overall, the wedding floral market is evolving to reflect changing preferences and values, with sustainability and personalization playing key roles in shaping current trends.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After a fulfilling 17-year career teaching 5th graders, I embarked on a new adventure in the wedding industry as a floral designer. My dream of working with flowers has been a long-held aspiration, and moving back to Texas from California provided the perfect opportunity to take that leap of faith.
To ensure I was well-equipped for this new chapter, I started by learning the basics from a parent of a former student. This introduction ignited a passion within me, and I eagerly sought out experts in the floral industry to further my knowledge. Traveling to various states and internationally, I learned from the best in the floral industry, constantly seeking to improve and expand my skills.
Today, my floral design services are known for their bespoke creativity, attention to detail, and personalized approach. I believe each floral arrangement should be as unique and memorable as the occasion it celebrates. From intimate gatherings to lavish affairs, my goal is to create floral designs that capture the essence of each event, leaving a lasting impression on clients and guests alike.
I am excited to continue this journey of learning and creativity, and I look forward to the opportunity to create stunning floral arrangements that exceed expectations. Contact us today to learn more about our floral design services and let us help create an unforgettable event!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Navigating social media as a small business owner can be challenging, but it’s a crucial part of marketing in today’s digital age. Initially, I sought help from a content creator to manage my social media presence. While Facebook was familiar for personal use, I hesitated to dive into platforms like Instagram or TikTok. However, I recognized that these platforms were where future brides were likely to discover my work and research my services.
Unfortunately, the success I hoped for didn’t materialize right away. Wedding floral design is a niche market, unlike retail florists, and building a following proved to be more challenging. I realized that to grow the following I wanted, I needed to take control of my social media presence. Despite being camera shy, I understood the importance of showcasing my work and engaging with potential clients.
One memorable moment was when I was caught dancing while making a wedding bouquet outside. The video, set to one of my favorite songs, unexpectedly went viral and gained me 1k followers on TikTok in just a few days. While I don’t want to be known as the “dancing florist,” this experience taught me the power of authenticity and connecting with my audience. The content that my audience enjoys the most is seeing the love between couples on their wedding day, and how I can create something unique for their color palette and wedding theme.
My goal for social media is to showcase the beauty of my work and inspire couples to envision their dream wedding. To efficiently manage my social media presence, I use apps to create visually appealing videos and AI to assist with writing captions and hashtags. These tools allow me to focus on what I do best—dedicating myself to creating beautiful wedding florals for couples—while ensuring that my social media presence continues to grow and engage with my audience.
