We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Bahlmann Jess Lindsley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heather Bahlmann , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
Hey Birdie was created to bring women together. When we began, being together wasn’t an option. We were in the middle of a pandemic and the need to gather was emminent. Our intention is to not simply gather for the sake of gathering, but to hold space for one another that is free of judgement and full of support and compassion – both for oneself and each other.
We began sharing why we felt this was important and were taken aback by just how much this resonated with others.
So many women had been taking a closer look at who they spend their time with and why and how – and that collectively we all wanted more. We are tired of surface level conversations and showing up in a way that is not authentic to our souls.
We started connecting with women online and sharing our why and the need and interest was immediately palpable.
From our discovery calls to our Flight Club launches, women are often brought to tears acknowledging just how much they desire to be seen and held.
We believe that we are interrupting an unfortunate societal evolution in which women don’t feel safe in one another’s company. We have created a space that warmly invites women to be open, honest, and vulnerable with each other. When they commit to doing so, the reward is tenfold. It becomes an element of their life that they never realized just how much they needed.
One of our early immersive programs brought together a group of nine women that were living very different lives, and whose paths would likely have never crossed – and who now cannot imagine living their lives without each other. Their bond became essential in their commitment to living a fuller life.
Another flock of ours has noted that prior to joining Hey Birdie over a year ago, they were “school friends” and now they are each other’s “ride or die” friends. Their interest in Flight Club initially originated from a collective desire for a social outlet and has grown into a deep friendship.
Truly, we feel like every moment we spend on Hey Birdie is heartwarming and inspiring to our journey.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our professional backgrounds include an array of event planning, team building and wellness. We were exceling and evolving in our careers and raising our daughters. It wasn’t until one fateful day, just after we had dropped our youngest at playschool – that we confessed we wanted more. We knew if we didn’t make the time and create the space to follow through on our curiosities, fully express our needs + desires and connect with others – that we would never be truly fulfilled.
We created our own women’s group that met monthly. Almost 7 years later and in the middle of a pandemic, we acknolwedged just how essential this commitment had been in our lives and for our personal growth. We knew there must be others out there with the same need – so we birthed, Hey Birdie.
Hey Birdie hosts unique events, immersive programming and women’s groups that provide the opportunity to fully embrace the feminine experience. We bring together like-minded women to support one another in their individual and collective quests to live their lives in their truest + fullest expression with compassion, curiosity, courage and connection.
In addition to programming for women, we have also committed to reaching out to girls + teens. We created a series of events we lovingly refer to as “Roar to Soar’. We address concerns with body image, conscious communication, menstral cycles + celebration, posture + power positions, and authentic connection.
We continue to create experiences in response to the energy our communities are expressing interest in. Nothing is off limits. Together, we will soar.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In the beginning, we found ourselves hesitating on a number of topics to discuss or experience because we felt we didn’t have enough expertise or training to do so.
However, our curiosity and interest is what guides us in so much of what we cover in our women’s groups + events, that we felt it was best to be honest and both share + learn alongside of our community instead of ever trying to represent ourselves as the experts of anything.
We are willing to f*ck up, get our hands dirty, stumble on our words. What we have decided is most important is to continue to consistently show up and be open. To show up messy, or incomplete – but to continue to show up and be supportive of those that are doing the same. After all, that is what this human experience is all about.
We just keep going – flying!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The dynamic between us and the strength of our friendship has been a key ingredient to our growth and success. We are able to not only honor the differences between us, but to respect and embrace them in a way that shines in our community. Our acceptance and admiration for one another mirrors the need of what women everywhere are seeking in their relationships.
We acknowledge when one another needs to step back and the other needs to take the lead.
We demonstrate committment and devotion to each other and our community.
We share the good, the bad and the ugly.
We ask for help and not only openly share our mistakes, but celebrate them.
