We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Allen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.
Alright, Heather thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I absolutely wish I had started my business sooner! I love what I do, and I often think about how much further along I could be if I had just taken the leap earlier.
I officially launched my business in late 2019, but my journey in the creative industry started long before that. I attended cosmetology school, worked in salons, and eventually became a makeup artist. My work naturally led me into the wedding industry, and I was constantly inspired by the energy, beauty, and storytelling that weddings embody.
At the time I started my photography business, I was at a crossroads in my life. I was tired of being someone else’s employee and felt this pull to build something that was completely my own. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one. Looking back, I don’t feel like starting sooner would have significantly changed my journey—I just wish I had believed in myself sooner.
That said, I truly believe everything happens in its own time. For me, that time was 2019, and it turned out to be exactly when I needed it to be. The experiences I had leading up to starting my business shaped the way I approach my work, my clients, and my creative process. It all came together at the perfect moment.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a traveling wedding photographer, and I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of storytelling through images. As a young child, I was fascinated by anything glamorous—playing with hair, and makeup, and dressing up my dolls for pretend weddings. This naturally led to an early love of photography, where I’d grab a camera and capture anything and everything around me. In high school, I took a photography course and fell in love with the art. It was my first taste of what would later become my passion and career.
Though I initially pursued a career in the beauty industry—working in salons and specializing as a makeup artist—I always found myself drawn to weddings. The energy, joy, and excitement of wedding days captivated me. I loved being part of such a monumental moment in people’s lives, and eventually, I realized that my heart wasn’t just in helping couples get ready for their big day—I wanted to preserve those moments forever. That’s when I decided to dive fully into wedding photography.
Today, I combine my love of travel and photography to offer my clients something truly unique. As a traveling wedding photographer, I get to see the world while connecting with amazing couples. I specialize in creating galleries that blend editorial-style portraits with authentic, candid moments. My goal is to capture not only how your wedding day looks but how it feels—from the quiet, intimate moments to the vibrant, joyful celebrations.
What sets me apart is my ability to make couples feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. I’m not just there to take photos—I’m there to create an experience. My clients often say I feel like a friend by their side, hyping them up while ensuring every detail and emotion is captured.
I’m incredibly proud to help my clients create memories that last a lifetime. Every gallery I deliver is not just a collection of photos—it’s a story of love, laughter, and connection. Whether it’s in the mountains, at the beach, or in a bustling city, I’m honored to be the one who gets to preserve the magic of these moments for my couples.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to preserve moments that people will cherish forever. As a wedding photographer, I’m entrusted with capturing one of the most important days in a couple’s life—a day full of love, joy, and connection. Knowing that my work will be part of their story for generations to come is incredibly humbling and fulfilling.
There’s something magical about turning fleeting moments into timeless art. Whether it’s a quiet glance between two people, a burst of laughter during the vows, or the energy on the dance floor, I love being able to freeze those emotions in time. Watching my couples relive their day through the images I create is the ultimate reward—it’s why I do what I do.
Being a creative also allows me to constantly grow and evolve. Every wedding, every couple, and every location brings new inspiration. It pushes me to think differently, experiment with light and composition, and refine my craft. It’s a career that feeds my soul while allowing me to share my passion with others in a deeply meaningful way.
Ultimately, the most rewarding part is the connection I build with my clients. I love hearing their stories, understanding their vision, and collaborating to create something that feels uniquely theirs. It’s more than just photography—it’s about creating an experience and delivering a legacy they’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think one thing non-creatives may struggle to fully understand about the journey of a creative is the deeply personal connection we have to our work. For many of us, it’s not just a job or a means to an end—it’s an extension of who we are. Every image I take, every wedding I capture, reflects not just my technical skill but also my vision, my perspective, and my heart.
Creativity isn’t always linear or easy to quantify. There are days when inspiration flows effortlessly, and others when self-doubt creeps in, making you question everything. What people may not see is the countless hours spent refining your craft, the moments of vulnerability when you put your work out into the world, or the weight of balancing art with the practicalities of running a business.
Another challenge is that being a creative often means wearing multiple hats. As a wedding photographer, I’m not just taking pictures—I’m managing timelines, communicating with clients, editing for hours on end, and ensuring my couples feel seen and celebrated. It’s incredibly fulfilling but also requires a level of dedication that goes far beyond the moments you see on social media.
What I wish more people understood is that creativity is both a privilege and a responsibility. It takes courage to pursue a path where success isn’t guaranteed and where your work is constantly open to interpretation. But for those of us who feel called to it, the rewards outweigh the challenges every single time.
For anyone who might be on the edge of embracing their creativity, my advice is simple: trust yourself and start. There’s no perfect time or roadmap, and the world needs your perspective. The journey may not always be easy, but it will be worth it.
