We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heath Martin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heath below.
Hi Heath, thanks for joining us today. Have you signed with an agent or manager? Why or why not?
I was about 3 years into my voice acting journey and had signed with a couple regional agents already, but for my goals of being in AAA video games and Animated shows etc, I needed a powerhouse, LA agent. I had already submitted materials to several big time agencies and no one was getting back to me. It was at that time, an actor I had worked with on some looping and ADR projects introduced me to legendary Dean Panaro. He sent me some audition materials and said he would take a listen on sort of a trial basis. After the 1st read, he extended representation to me and we have been going strong ever since.

Heath, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a creative all my life. I started singing as soon as I could form words and never really looked back. Signed record deals throughout a 30+ year career, toured and made music. In music, I always had to fit into someone’s box. someone’s idea of what I “should” be, and after so many years, I was finally burnt out and tired of the cutthroat nature of the music biz. My wife suggested voice acting after some time and I started looking into it. I already had stage acting and some film work under my belt but being on a microphone for 35 yrs was my best training to that point. I googled voice acting and was sent to a YouTube channel called VO BUZZ Weekly, with hosts Chuck Duran and Stacey J Aswad. I started watching all the videos, collecting info and a list of who’s in the biz. I started commenting on the videos and began a rapport with Chuck n Stacey, Chuck a demo producer to all the greatest talent, and his wife Stacey a famous voice talent (the longtime virtual host of Disneyland theme parks).
Chuck became my 1st mentor in the biz. and he has been a rock for me ever since. Then I found my next set of Mentors in Steve Blum, Bob Bergen, Joe Cipriano, Jess Harnell, Rob Paulsen, Maurice Lamarche and many many others. I’ve constantly trained, upgraded my sound quality, studio and equipment. I have a broadcast quality setup and a speedy turn around for my buyers and clients, but the thing I most often point to when asked what I provide? I’ve learned to live with an attitude of gratitude, and though it may sound a bit cliché, it has served me well, just being of service to other’s. Clients like MSN, The General Insurance, Pit Stop Games and others have raved about my vocal quality, stating how my reads were exactly what they were looking for, but I really pride myself in being of service, which means great communication, kindness and a promise of excellence. I will work with the client until I can deliver exactly what they are looking for.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
All I ever wanted to be was an R&B superstar.. A crooner and a song writer. I had worked with legends in the game. From HTown to Silk, Jodeci and Timbaland. I was singularly focused on my success. In the music scene, you have to have a level of ego, you have to KNOW that you are at least great. When things started to point to it never happening on the level I was striving for, I had to shift focus to alternate pathways. I don’t know if it was about me getting older and more mature (or more centered even?) but when I switched focus to Voice Acting and started learning how to live in gratitude? everything started to shift for me. Suddenly as a voice actor, I could be anyone or anything, I wanted to be. From an angry old tree, to an Orc Warrior, a demon, several aliens and monsters as well as a dark lord of the sith. My only regret was wishing I had found this biz decades earlier.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
my goal or my mission in this, is several layers, to be the actor that everyone wants to work with, to always be of service to the greater goal (it’s not about me or my voice, it’s about my partners / buyers / clients needs. How can I fit into your vision? how can I best service your project?) to live with gratitude every single day of my life.
To help young actors understand these hard learned values. And apply them to their own journeys through mentorship and paying it forward.
To make my family proud.
To be the best me, I can possibly be.
To stand against racism and bullying and to spread love in any way I can.
