We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heath Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Heath, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
We started a mobile billboard company with a new tech in a new truck that bleed money and was going nowhere. Three years later we were broke and hopeless. I was out by my pool crying out to God when he gave me a vision. That night my wife had a similar dream and fast forward we landed McDonalds as a client and became the largest sampling company in the US for them for over a decade. During that, our entire business model changed, and we begin to solve problems for big national clients. God continued to reveal himself thru additional experiences that led us to giving more than million dollars a year away to non-profits to help inner city kids, water well projects, kids in crisis with no hope of a future, and many other worthy opportunities.
Heath, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
At Lime Media, we bring imagination to life by customizing vehicles and other cool stuff to create marketing experiences nationwide. Lime Media’s services include strategy and ideation, 3D creative, turnkey experiential marketing programs, custom fabrication, tour management, logistics and staffing services including brand ambassadors, tour managers and drivers. Our offices span East and West coast including Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and St. Louis. The Lime Media headquarters facility currently exceeds 36,000 square feet and is home to more than 175 vehicles, props, staging and other experiential assets.
My experience leads me to a “get it done attitude”. When others want to tell you why it can’t be done I will spend that same effort and energy to figure out how it can be done. I thrive in high pressure situations and I love my job and what I do.
My Goals are simple, to Glorify Christ in everything I do. We have a homeless ministry that I spend a lot of my time and resources towards that I believe in. Some times people need a second chance and someone to believe in them and that’s what we do. . . we help others help themselves. We also have focused our attention to Liberia with one goal, bring clean water border to border by 2020 and the Gospel to all we serve. That has been accomplished. Another Goal of mine is to raise my 2 boys to have a “get it done attitude” and a passion to do what others can’t. . . dreams are the limit and they are FREE.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I saw a problem I sprung into action and created a 180 degree change. As I have gotten older and wiser and hired good strong leaders around me I have learned that 1 degree changes are much more sustainable in the longterm. We work to change our people 1% a day now and the results are remarkable.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
We had $3k to our name and our burn rate was $10k a week. We got a vision and a dream Sunday and had a big meeting with McDonalds ad agency Wednesday. As I was leaving they referred me to Gina who was running Dallas Morning News. That afternoon she gave me a check for $100k to help them become DallasNews.com. Basically we had a solve she needed and gave her the confidence she needed to move forward.
