Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hazel Calderon . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hazel , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My Father Sergio T Calderon and Mother Maria del Carmen Calderon, taught me to strive for excellent. They encouraged me to pursue my dreams through hard work and dedication. When I first expressed my desire to compete in the Miss Nicaragua Pageant, My Mother said “Yes, Let’s go for it.” My parents have supported me in every a person can be supported. Forever Grateful
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began by representing my country as Miss Nicaragua (2002) in The Miss World Pageant and working as a commercial talent in Miami for McDonald’s, Tostitos and HP. Hollywood Film/TV opportunities started to present themselves and I appeared as Lola on General Hospital and Poppy’s Friend along side Emma Roberts in The Wild Child.
My creative talents have been cultivated here in Los Angeles while studying at Playhouse West, Flappers Comedy Club and Annie Grindlay Studio. Studying has been a major part of my life and allowed me to continue working at my very best. Currently, I have been Hosting Live Shows and Promoting a Horror Film.
In Elizabeth Yoder’s Film “Surprise,” I portrayed a multitude of characters including Jen, Fantasy Wife and Monster. It was my most challenging role yet and allowed me to stretch my acting skills on the big screen. Last November, I was awarded Best Actress at Zed Fest Film Festival and our team shared a collective award at Show Low Film Festival for Best Horror Film.
This year, I will be performing for Laugh Factory, The Moth and TikTok Live. My boyfriend and I started an online show for kids. The show features games, food challenges and slime making competitions. Our audience tunes in every week from around the the world to participate in our Super Slime Parties. Our goal is to positively impact a million people in 2023.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It all started back in February 2020, when we got the news that our industry was shutting down for The COVID Pandemic. There was no work and we were stuck in the house on Lockdown. TikTok was an interesting way to connect with our friends and family. My boyfriend, Garrison Oliver Gross and I started making “Boy vs Girl Challenge,” videos. There is nothing better than beating your significant other in a 60 second doughnut eating competition and getting 6 million views.
Once we hit our first viral video, we started to understand our audience. We could tell that our followers were kids between the ages of 4 – 10 years old. They wanted to see my boyfriend and I compete and have have as much fun as possible. As time went on, our fans helped us develop ideas for games, food challenges and super slime parties. We were able to make videos everyday, share positive energy and impact over 155 thousand people on a daily basis.
Creatives have to be aware of their skills, talents and authentic voice. It is very important that all of this energy is used in alignment with an overall purpose. Our purpose was to share love and encourage people to embrace themselves. We were looking to connect in an authentic way and have as much fun as possible. Timing is everything! During these times, people need love, connection and an opportunity to laugh. If you can make people smile your on the right path. If you can make them laugh, your golden.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
“How To Heal Your Life” by Louise Haye has made an incredible impact in my life. You Come First! In regards to the health of your mind, body and spirit. Each and every person needs to work toward understanding themselves. What is it that we need to do in order to regulate our overall health and well being? In the book, Louise Haye makes us aware of early childhood traumas and how they can impact our lives. Simply holding onto toxic hardwired patterns could derail our progress.
