We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Haysam Ali a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Haysam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Since I moved to Los Angeles about a year and a half ago, I have had the privilege of studying acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life thus far, especially because I feel I have come to know myself in a more meaningful way, understand what I have gone through, and accept who I am.
With that said, I have started to feel comfortable discussing topics that are important not only to me but to society as well, such as bullying. This year, I received the incredible opportunity to be the lead actor in a short film aimed at raising awareness about this issue. The film is currently circulating in festivals, and the feedback from viewers—reflecting on the topic and raising awareness—fills me with profound gratitude.
I consider this my most meaningful project at this moment in my life because it has made me realize how happy and invested I am in acting while also advocating for important societal issues. Being able to create art that entertains audiences while simultaneously opening their eyes to critical issues is extremely rewarding.
“PLAY” tells the story of Henry, a dedicated father and husband, whose buried past comes to light during a playful moment with his wife, Verônica. As they navigate the highs and lows of their relationship, Verônica brings painful memories to the surface for Henry, who reacts in an unexpected way.
This is my first work in Hollywood and represents a significant personal achievement that required a lot of effort and discipline. It feels like this opportunity came at just the right time. I believe I have drawn from my own story of overcoming challenges to bring to life a narrative that aims to provoke deep reflection on bullying.
I want to use this film as a chance to open a discussion about how bullying can shape lives and affect self-esteem and relationships in adulthood. Through Henry’s journey, the film promises to evoke empathy and understanding among those who face or have faced similar battles. As I mentioned, I advocate for a world where no one has to overcome the shadows of the past alone. “PLAY” is more than just a narrative; it is a call to action. Through creating art, we can help change people’s views on these important issues.

Haysam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Brazilian-American actor best known as a television host and as a cast member on a reality TV show in 2012. Most recently, I earned five nominations for Best Actor for my lead role as Henry Costa in “Play” (2024).
I am the son of immigrants from Lebanon and Italy, and my diverse background gives me a unique perspective on my craft. I have been passionate about acting since a young age, and I am certainly drawn to roles that tell true stories and have a positive impact.
I love connecting with new people in the industry; it’s a way for me to keep learning from the amazing talents out there. I am currently working on a few different projects, and having outside ideas is very helpful. I am also open to sharing my expertise in any way I can. Regarding my followers, I am incredibly grateful for those who have supported me throughout the years, encouraging me to pursue my passion. For that, I feel very lucky!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The ability to connect with others through storytelling is rewarding. Creating art allows us to share experiences, provoke thought, and evoke emotions, forging a bond with audiences that can transcend differences.
Additionally, the opportunity to inspire change is incredibly fulfilling; it not only brings me personal satisfaction but also fosters empathy and understanding in the community.
Art has the power to make a meaningful impact on individuals and society as a whole, and that makes me happy!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my audience on social media has been a journey rooted in authenticity and connection. When I first started, I focused on sharing my personal experiences, challenges, and successes in a genuine way. I wanted people to see me as a real person, not just a curated image.
My advice for those just starting out is to stay true to yourself. Authenticity is key; people are drawn to what’s real, not superficial. Sure, it’s fine to showcase your accomplishments, but the true bond with your audience comes when they can relate to you as a human being. Share your struggles, your growth, and the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
Engage with your followers by responding to comments and creating content that resonates with them. The more open and honest you are, the more people will connect with you. Remember, it’s not just about numbers; it’s about building a community where everyone feels valued and understood. Stay genuine, and you’ll naturally attract those who appreciate you for who you are.
