We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hayley Shields a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hayley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.

My parents have always been very supportive of me. Throughout my life, I have loved being creative, and they have supported me in all of my ventures—from jewelry making to handmade cards, paper crafts, and, of course, crochet! My parents have always been such a great support system, and I would not have the confidence to do what I do today without them.

Hayley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I’m Hayley, the creator of Heirloom Treasures Crochet. I reside in Concord, North Carolina with my husband, Thacher, and our daughter, Sunday. My passion for crochet began about 8 years ago when my nana, an exceptional crocheter, taught me. We shared many wonderful moments working on projects together, and I dearly miss her, wishing she could witness my progress.

For me, crochet isn’t just about profit; it’s about enjoyment. Every project I undertake brings me genuine joy and when someone purchases one of my creations, it feels like being rewarded for having fun. I happily accept custom orders, crafting everything from blankets and hats to plushies and beyond!

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

Despite crocheting for nearly a decade, I was unaware of the vast community of crochet artists and pattern designers on Instagram. Connecting with these talented individuals and customers alike has been truly rewarding. Social media has significantly contributed to the growth of my business.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The absolute best feeling is watching people’s faces light up when they see one of my creations. Knowing that something I crafted with my own hands brings joy to others is incredibly rewarding. I take pride in crafting special heirloom pieces that people will cherish for years to come.
