We were lucky to catch up with Hayley Price recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hayley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I️ guess I️ always knew I️ wanted to be a professional creative, from teaching art camps when I️ was just a kid, to selling my artwork to interior designers in high school and college, to then going on to do marketing for a magazine, the creative draw was always there. The question for me was how do I️ pursue my passion professionally without it losing its shine?
I️ am equally business minded and artistically creative, which I️ have found is a less than common pairing. I️ like the accounting, I️ like the financials, the goal-setting, the marketing, all of it! I️ remember declaring a double major in Business and Studio Art and everyone asking, “what are you going to do with that pairing?” Hearing that question, I definitely had something to prove. I️ didn’t know exactly how, but I️ knew I️ had to find something that used both sides of my brain.
After college, I️ completed a 6 month program at a well-known magazine in Charleston, South Carolina. I️ loved the experience and connections it lended me, but I️ had this drive to pursue something on my own. From there, The Scouted Studio Online Art Gallery and The Art Coaching Club were born! Today, I️ found the perfect marriage of business and art, I️ run an online art gallery and provide business coaching through various resources to artists worldwide.
Hayley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I️ strive to be a dedicated advocate and mentor for artists at every stage of their careers. I️ began my career as an artist myself, primarily selling to interior designers. I️ enjoyed the success, but knew I️ wanted a career that didn’t solely rely on my passion.
In 2019, The Scouted Studio opened its doors. First an in-person gallery, now an online gallery, The Scouted Studio connects emerging artists with interested clients, giving artists the representation, marketing, and information they need to grow their following and businesses.
As the gallery grew, I️ noticed more and more artists coming to me with questions about their business, how to grow, how to find representation, how to work with designers, how to find their ideal customer. Between my time as an artist, my time running the gallery, and my time pursuing my business degree, the answers came quite naturally to me. I️ guided artist after artist, until one day I️ realized that there was a real need for a coach for creatives. From there The Art Coaching Club was born.
Today, I️ focus on finding ways to support artists at all levels and at every step of their journey. Whether they want to sell more work or have more time, it is my mission to empower artists to grow, connect, and thrive, transforming their artistic talents into sustainable and fulfilling careers.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I️ wish I️ had asked for help. At the time, which wasn’t that long ago, it felt very isolating being an artist. I️ didn’t have any answers and I️ was left to figure everything out on my own. Even back then, there were coaching, courses, and blogs that I️ could have turned to for support. I️ feel like a learned a lot in the struggle, but if I️ were to go back and do it again I️ would have invested in help and seen success so much sooner.
Early in a career, it can be scary throwing money at something without knowing what the result will be, but since then I️ have worked with a coach and signed up for a few courses, all of which have completely transformed my business. I️ learned that investing in yourself and your business forces you to do the work and the transformation is always impressive.
I️ also want to mention that you can ask a friend, a mentor, or another artist for help for free. We don’t have to be on this entrepreneurial journey alone. It just takes asking that one question and who knows it might save you a lot of time, money, and headache in the long-run.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to empower artists to grow, connect, and thrive, transforming their artistic talents into sustainable and fulfilling careers. I️ want every creative to find their version of success. Through my gallery, I️ offer bi-annual Emerging Artist Shows. These shows invite artists at all levels to apply to showcase their work to my large network of art collectors. There is so much creative talent in the world, but many artists don’t have the network to grow as quickly as they’d prefer. My shows uplift artists and boost their network no matter how far along they are in their career.
Through the Art Coaching Club, I️ offer free and affordable resources to artists at every level so they can, again, find their version of success. Through podcast interviews with artists and experts, digital downloads, memberships, coaching, and more, artists have all of the tools they need to succeed right at their fingertips.
Success looks different for everyone. I️ encourage artists explain exactly what happiness looks like in their careers and in their personal life and then we create a strategy to get them there.
