We were lucky to catch up with Hayden Akins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hayden, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being a creative is such a wonderful thing! It allows me to explore my imagination and bring ideas to life. But it’s completely normal to wonder about what having a regular job might be like. I sometimes daydream about how a regular job can provide stability, a predictable routine, and a steady income. I often have to take a step back when I realize I’m putting too much pressure on myself to constantly come up with new ideas. However, I remember that being a creative is a unique and fulfilling path because it allows me to express my true self, follow my passions, and make a meaningful impact in the world. I like to pretend like I could be anything else but a creative and that’s completely untrue. This is the path I was meant for. So, while it’s natural to wonder about the alternative, I do my best to embrace the joy and excitement that being a creative brings to my life!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From the time I was a little girl, I always knew I wanted to be someone other girls and women could look up to. I didn’t understand how that would happen or the path I would take to get there, but it has unfolded beautifully over the years.
As I approached the end of my college years, I felt an immense void in my heart. It was as if something crucial was missing, and no matter what I attempted, nothing could fill it… until I rediscovered Jesus. My spiritual journey has been refining, and the more I learn about Jesus’ heart, the more He impacts mine.
I started my business a few years ago with an idea that has continued to evolve. What I thought I knew and desired led to a vision I couldn’t have dreamt of alone. It has required me to pivot, rework, and restart many times. And I’m finally starting to see how necessary each step has been.
When I started my LLC, I thought I would be an online blogger, which would be my primary form of communication… it felt safe to me. I wouldn’t have to get my hands too dirty; I’d mostly share from the comfort of where I found my feet, and I’d do it at my own pace. Now, I have a social platform where I share bits and pieces of my life. I also have a podcast (Here to Remind You), I’ve written and published journals/devotionals, I’m a coach for Christian women, I host a beach picnic once a month in Los Angeles, and I just started a Mighty Network community for the Christian girlies! Join our sisterhood.
I help Christian women uncover their worthiness outside of romantic relationships, foster sisterhood in any season, and cultivate a deeper, more intimate relationship with God.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of the first things I had to learn about social media is that it’s a tool. It’s a tool to reach the audience you’re called to. It’s not for the approval of friends or family; it’s about the assignment on your life and those who need what you have on the inside of you. Once I started looking at it like that, everything changed.
The most fruitful advice I would give is to be authentic to yourself, not to follow what everyone else does on the internet. I’ve heard time and time again, “Make sure you post five times a day; be consistent.” But what if five times a day isn’t sustainable for you? Do what works for YOU! If you can manage to post three times a week, start there and work your way up to more. I burned out when I tried to follow the gurus and copy their formulas.
What I’d recommend is to get quiet. Ask yourself (and those around you) what you’re good at, what you excel at, and what lights you up and excites you. Chances are, you’ll be able to create an abundance of high-performing content around these areas, and the ideas will flow. Also, consider how you can be of service to your audience. How you might be able to solve a problem or offer entertainment. There’s a lot of noise on the internet, and you don’t want to find yourself adding to it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In everything I do, I want to remind people of God’s love for them.
