We recently connected with Havin Baucom II and have shared our conversation below.
Havin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story that illustrates an important or relevant lesson you learned in school
As a kid I attended 10 different grade schools. This was frustrating growing up, but it was easy to make friends, hence the opportunity for trial and error. I believe it seemed easy due to people admiring my clothes or style along with my personality. As a kid, you often want to fit in, and I wanted to fit in but in a way where I also stood out. I wasn’t afraid to be different and unknowingly, this was identified as confidence by my peers. As an adult, I learned those experiences were pivotal because they’d later help me identify what I was passionate about, they’d reveal how I could help others develop their confidence through image and how my personality could be beneficial to starting a business.
Havin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My business is H. Baucom llc. a wardrobe styling business named after me. The idea of starting my business came from working a normal ‘9-to-5’ with little fulfillment. Therefore, contemplating on working someplace I could make a difference while doing what I enjoy. I eventually landed a styling gig at Men’s Wearhouse and over the course of time accepted a position at Nordstrom. Those countless experiences led me to determine what was effective and ineffective in the business, helped me discover new ideas and it revealed what I desired to change about the industry. So, I took the leap of faith and started the journey. I use my daily wardrobe as marketing and often share tips with others. When people find the tips useful, they reach out for consultation and that’s where the magic begins.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As mentioned before my personality could draw people in. Primarily because I wasn’t disagreeable but welcoming (as I’d like to think) yet quiet and bashful. Unfortunately, many mistook me for a pushover. After realizing my personality was working against me, I had to reshape how I expressed myself. I started to climb out of my shell, started to approach people instead of waiting for them to approach me. I became vocal and realized it was okay to say things wrong at times. I didn’t have to be fearful of saying something incorrect. My business and relationships began to increase due to my transformation. If this hadn’t happened, I would have remained stagnant.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Majority of my clientele comes from word of mouth. That said, I’m very attentive to my clients. Knowing I’m not the only wardrobe stylist, I find it most important to provide the best service/experience. I may or may not be the best to do what I do but I can present the best experience for my client leaving lasting memories. Which also attracts them to becoming consistent clients.
