We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Havilah Asher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Havilah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Being successful can appear in many ways. For me, sustaining my faith, having a strong sense of community and consistency in my self-care has created success. It’s a journey from day to day but I think setting realistic goals for my business and making progress is crucial. As a business owner, having a sense of community and support has helped me to push forward in times when I needed it. I value the feedback customers give because it becomes a mutually beneficial relationship. Their needs are important to me, and the consistency has helped me to build trust with new and existing customers. Last but most of all, my personal self-care and cleansing is a big part of my business. I take great joy in what I do and people can see that. My love and perspective on skincare has evolved to focusing on ingredients. I get to learn and create beautiful products while educating on the importance of natural skincare.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Havilah Asher. I’m the owner of Boujee Bar Skincare, a plant-based soap company that specializes in body care items to help nourish the skin. The mission is to minimize irritation, hydrate and moisturize. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio where my career began in business marketing. I’ve always had the mindset on building a business I was passionate about. The business started from my own skin sensitivity. Over time, allergies have made my skin somewhat sensitive, and the stress of work was impacting my skin. I was convinced I could do something about it in 2019. I bought a book called the Power of Essential Oils and I began to study. That led to learning about plants and soon I began making blends. I was fascinated by how certain ingredients made small but significant changes. I fell in love with herbs and the soapmaking process. It brought so much joy that I decided to share with those close to me. My family and friends were very supportive. It gave me a sign to start that business and Boujee Bar Skincare was born. My heart was in the right place, so I planned and acted. I started with local Saturday deliveries and shortly after launched online in 2020. I’ve become an advocate for selfcare, body cleansing and natural plant-based ingredients. Soap is a part of skincare, especially for those with sensitive skin.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with my clients through email and social media such as Facebook and Instagram. Email marketing is still the best way to foster a customer relationship. It’s easier and less expensive in terms of customer retention. Most of my sales are from recurring customers. I work very hard on building a list both online and in person. Offering sales, special discounts or setting reminders by email makes the buying process easier for them. However, my attention is shifting more towards engagement on social media. I’ll be launching more video content because it allows me to be personable and genuine. As I’m the face of my brand, people need to know who I am and my journey establishing Boujee Bar Skincare. Authenticity and consistency are huge factors in building brand loyalty.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
A lot of new customers come from social media and local events. Events are great for in- person engagement. There’s nothing like smelling or trying items in person and having something tangible in hand. I absolutely love events and engaging face to face. They both contribute equally but social media is leading.
