We were lucky to catch up with Havannah Goshen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Havannah , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
How I got my first client, is a crazy story. So in 2021 after Covid-19 had hit the US. I decided that I needed to do something that inspired me to push myself into my calling and what I always loved to do, which is hair. At the moment I was staying in Arkansas. I made the big decision to move to Houston and go to Barber College to further my skill set and career. I was very hesitant not knowing if it was going to work out for me or not but fortunately it did. My very first client was the first day that I go the opportunity to cut hair at Trend Barer College. It was so nerve wrecking. It was a older gentleman that wanted a bald head and beard trim. I just remember cutting his hair with my trimmers and thinking man I really find this exciting. Not knowing if my client was going to be pleased or not, once I finished his service he was so satisfied that he became a regular client throughout the months of me attending Barber College.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Havannah Davinci. I am a Barber/ Creator I come from a small town in Arkansas called Chidester, populated with less than 2000 people. I get into my industry with an open mind to always learn something new. The Barber Industry is very competitive and has a lot to offer. You can start your own business and become an owner within years after graduation or you can go and pursue entrepreneurship which is what most barbers do. Starting your journey as a barber takes discipline and remaining humble. Knowing that some days you might get 1 haircut and other days you could get up to 14 haircuts. You have to know how to manage your money and budget so that way you can continue to pursue your dream. The main services that I provide are haircuts, fades, facial shaves, designs, waxing and much more. Working in a barbershop can be quite challenging from getting to know all the big personalities that you work around and also getting to know your clients. I always make sure that when a client sits in my chair they get a wonderful conversation as well as a perfected haircut. I am most proud of graduating from Barber College l. It was not easy I worked 2 jobs and attended school full time. I just had the mindset that if this was something I wanted to do I would take it serious and go at it full throttle! My work is ver unique I don’t only cut hair but I also do makeup and Post my latest Styles/trend keeping my audience interested. This is key t on having a brand you have to get creative and stand out from your competitors.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is money rules the world. Money is a good asset but being in this game teaches you that the people are just as important. You want to build a good reputation with those around you and that is what helps you succeed to make all the money in the world. When I first started cutting hair I was so worried about how many cuts I would get per hour instead of worrying about if my client was satisfied or not. Now I worry about both and it has helped me become successful!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me growing my clientele would be offering more. Always offer your clients extra services, drinks, sample products. It attracts them to your business because you have more to offer!
