We were lucky to catch up with Haspil Lafontant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Haspil, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
There was one late night where I was just in my head, and thought “ I want to create a short EP “. I worked on it for about 2 weeks… found a studio and once I laid it down it really gave me a different sense of exhilaration. I hadn’t been that excited doing anything else. My style paved unorthodox to the average sound but that’s what reeled ears in. I knew it was different but I wasn’t weary of how it’d be received. Friends to a liking to it more than I ever expected. It was about 4 songs but only for 6 minutes, which was intentional to only give them a taste and draw them in with an urge for more.
So I did more.. and starting out it was just for fun really but then i fell in love with it deeply and have been hooked ever since. I’ve had growth in a short period of time.. so I’ve seen and so have others. Music allows me to be fully naked. I set my own limitations, I say what I want to, I don’t have to worry about being right or wrong. I’m usually not AS talkative when it comes to personal adversity or whatever im going through it, but when I’m able to let it off my chest through songs and hearing it in the studio brings a release to me, an immense weight comes off of me and it’s like as if it never happened. It brings me peace..
That’s when I knew that I would want to pursue it. I don’t care necessarily for the material or money, my main incentive is change, change for myself and the ones around me that believe me. it’s important to know your “ why “ because ultimately that’s what you will come back to assess. When your passionate about something you won’t rest until you achieve it. a lot of being say that it’s just consistency but I object. you can be consistent in anything but eventually stop.. I can go to the gym consistently and slack off, I can talk to someone consistently and cut them off. PASSION breeds consistency, because passion drives you to where you won’t stop.
Haspil, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I comprise my music off of pure originality, self awareness, emotion and being authentic. I too am an empath, I practically feel everything. So everything is feel for me. When I hear a beat I must first resonate with it, I gotta feel it in my spirit because that is when I can fully zone out when I am at one with it.
When I’m in my element my ego is out of its shell completely, things I say in my craft I wouldn’t just outright say on a daily basis. I usually can be quiet about certain things or modest even lol. But none of that matters when I’m making something. But that’s exactly what it’s for, to be someone you’re normally not, So you never expect how I’ll attack a song . this is where the separation between self and ego come into play. Most people have troubles doing that but when you live in whatever ego you have then people don’t really have much to look forward to. Versus remaining a mystery.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding I get with being an artist is how my music made someone feel. It’s never materialistic. It means the most to me when someone is able to dissect the things I was saying and understand where I was coming from. It’s means more to me when friends message me with how much they enjoyed it. Mostly all things rewarding comes from the way I can impact others.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Promotional Tools! behind everything is money and marketing. Which is vital in pushing everything that you’re doing. I figured that along the journey and it most definitely did further my reach exactly how i knew it would.
