Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harvey Fitz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Harvey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Indeed, earning a full-time living from my creative work has been a gratifying journey. It wasn’t an overnight success, but rather a gradual process of passion meeting persistence. Initially, it wasn’t a full-time pursuit as I balanced other commitments, but as my creative endeavors gained momentum, the transition occurred. I began by establishing a strong online presence, showcasing my work on various platforms and building a community around my artistic vision. Networking played a crucial role —connecting with like-minded individuals, collaborating on projects, and participating in relevant events. These interactions not only exposed my work to a broader audience but also opened doors to potential opportunities.
As my creative portfolio expanded, I diversified income streams. This involved monetizing my industry knowledge, expertise, and spoken word poetry through commissioned pieces, collaborations, and curating artist workshops. Engaging with my audience became a priority, ensuring they felt part of the creative journey, which, in turn, fostered support.
No, it wasn’t an instantaneous achievement. Initially, I balanced my creative pursuits with other responsibilities. The turning point came when my debut book of poetry To Haiku’m It May Concern gained recognition, and demand increased. One notable milestone was when a that year I got to cover the BaltimoreAFRAM Festival when Brandy headlined it. Long story short she highlighted an iconic photo I took of her and that.viral moment literally changed the trajectory of my artistic career, leading to more bookings, commissions and opportunities.
Another crucial step was refining my online presence. Creating a professional website, optimizing social media platforms, and consistently sharing my creative process helped to establish credibility. Collaborations with established artists and peers, and well and prominent political and societal figures, and participation in renowned exhibitions marked significant milestones, elevating my visibility in the creative community.
Hindsight often provides valuable insights. Looking back, streamlining certain aspects could have potentially expedited the process. A more strategic approach to networking, leveraging online platforms, and seeking mentorship earlier on might have accelerated my growth. However, the organic nature of the journey, the learning experiences, and the gradual evolution of my craft have shaped both my art and entrepreneurial spirit. While there’s always room for improvement, I believe the process, with its twists and turns, has contributed to the authenticity of my creative voice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a distinguished creative curator of cultural awesomeness, renowned for my transformative journey in the artistic realm. My entrance into the industry was marked by an innate passion for creating experiences that resonate with the soul which began professionally as a production assistant.
My artistic odyssey began with a fusion of traditional and contemporary influences, shaped by my diverse cultural experiences. My unique perspective, coupled with an unwavering commitment to authenticity, laid the foundation for a brand synonymous with cultural vibrancy and creativity. As a multifaceted creative, I offer a spectrum of products and services such as photography, videography, creative consulting, and workshops that transcend conventional boundaries. From awe-inspiring visual art to immersive installations and performance arts events, I craft experiences that speak to the heart of cultural narratives. My portfolio showcases a kaleidoscope of mediums, reflecting my commitment to pushing artistic boundaries.
One of my key strengths is my ability to solve nuanced problems for clients. Whether it’s conveying a brand’s cultural essence through art or creating immersive installations for events, my work goes beyond aesthetics. I collaborate closely with clients to understand their unique challenges, infusing cultural authenticity into every piece. I often joking say that if Victor Newman from Young & The Restless and Olivia Pope from Scandal had a love child it would be me.
What distinguishes me is my dedication to fostering a sense of community through my art. My projects often involve collaborations with local artisans, musicians, and creators, enriching the cultural depth of each endeavor. Pride radiates through my accomplishments, with notable milestones including high-profile exhibitions, collaborations with internationally recognized artists, and the creation of iconic experiences that have left an indelible mark on cultural events.
For potential clients, followers, and supporters, I want them to know that my work is not just about art; it’s about storytelling, connection, and the celebration of diverse cultures. My brand is a gateway to cultural exploration, and each piece is an invitation to embark on a journey of cultural awesomeness. In essence, I am more than an artist – I am a cultural curator shaping experiences that transcend the ordinary, leaving an imprint of cultural vibrancy and authenticity in the hearts of those who encounter my work.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my perspective, fostering a supportive environment for artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem involves several key elements. Firstly, society can acknowledge and value the cultural and economic contributions of artists by recognizing the significance of their work. This can be manifested through public initiatives, awards, and platforms that celebrate and elevate artistic endeavors.
Secondly, financial support is crucial. Establishing more grants, scholarships, and funding opportunities for artists, especially emerging talents, enables them to pursue their craft without undue financial burden. Encouraging patronage and investing in the arts can further contribute to sustaining a vibrant creative ecosystem.
Education plays a pivotal role. Integrating arts education into curricula at all levels helps cultivate an appreciation for creativity from a young age. Supporting accessible workshops, mentorship programs, and skill development initiatives contributes to the continuous growth of artists and creatives.
Building inclusive spaces is equally important. Society can encourage diverse representation and perspectives in the arts by supporting underrepresented artists, fostering inclusivity in exhibitions, events, and collaborations. Creating platforms that amplify marginalized voices ensures a more equitable and rich creative landscape.
Lastly, awareness and engagement are key. Encouraging people to actively participate in the arts, attend events, and support local creatives strengthens the connection between artists and their communities. Cultivating a culture of appreciation for the arts makes a significant impact on the sustainability of a thriving creative ecosystem.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a full-time creative is the profound joy that comes from cultivating empathic connections through my work. It goes beyond the tangible outcomes – it’s about the emotional resonance and the genuine connections formed with those who engage with my creations.
Cultivating empathic connections is the heartbeat of my creative journey. Whether it’s through visual art, immersive installations, or cultural narratives, I aim to evoke emotions and foster a deep understanding between the audience and my creations. Witnessing people connect with the essence of my work, experiencing moments of shared emotion and understanding, is incredibly fulfilling.
The ability to touch hearts, spark meaningful conversations, and create a space where individuals feel seen and understood is what makes being a full-time creative truly rewarding. It’s the power of art to transcend barriers and forge connections that adds a profound and meaningful dimension to my creative pursuits.
