Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harry Guest. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Harry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?My sharp dialogue
I want to be able to look back at the work I’ve created and know that it’s had an effect people. The way my hair stood on end when the helicopter flies over Isla Nubar in ‘Jurassic Park’ for the first time, the way I cried with laughter during ‘Anchorman’, the way I welled up in ‘Interstellar’ – imagine giving people these feelings – I’d like my legacy to be that I was able to make people think and feel in a way they didn’t anticipate they would through watching my work. I also enjoy trying new things and pushing boundaries so as I build a portfolio of work I’d like that to be something noted in my expression.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a screenwriter and director from London.
I entered the film and tv world as a script developer for various studios in London from Heyday Films (Harry Potter) to Number 9 (Youth) and Revolution (Rush). I got into these places by knocking on doors relentlessly until someone gave me an email address at Ealing Studios and I was able to apply for a script development internship, which I got. But honestly – I would have made tea, and I did, a lot.
Over ten years I’ve worked as an assistant director on Hollywood movies, as a producer for large companies like Discovery and freelance for various companies and clients. I’ve helped companies develop factual and scripted content, and shot taster tapes for new ideas. I now focus on writing and directing.
I started writing my own scripts and have won awards for my work, which involves a clarity of vision not just for how it will be read but also as to how it will look on screen. This is where my stylised film aesthetic grew. My work hones in on great stories and unique visuals often revealing world’s we know but in a new light; whether that’s with humour, aesthetics, detail, drama or simply turning the plain into the beautiful.
My sharp dialogue and pacing on paper is a reflection of the powerful characters I’ve come into contact with growing up in London, from building sites to corporate offices to film sets to giant Irish family gatherings. I’m drawn to the funny, ridiculous and the irreverent, and I love an antihero.
I’ve directed commercials for Puttshack Golf, Contiki, Liverpool Football Club, and Ballantines Whiskey to name a few. I’ve directed fashion and social content for clients from Amazon to the BBC and LFW. I just shot a TV Pilot ‘The Great Library’, a Car Ad for ‘Ora Funky Cat’ and a theatrical comedy-drama short, ‘Ocean Brew’ with an all star cast and crew. I like ambitious and fast flowing pieces that standalone as great films as much as they sell and direct consumers to a product or service.
We also just released the second season of a Painting and Music show called ‘Painting-To’. This co-founded project puts renowned DJs and artists in a room together for an hour to create a large canvas to a live DJ set and I’m super excited to be part of this growing entity.
I’m looking forward to sharing my latest short film ‘Wreckless Abandon’ and my tv series ‘Eat My Dust’ which is currently under exclusivity with a company in the UK.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that being busy doesn’t necessarily equate to success. I personally love being busy, but taking a breath and focusing on specific projects (sticking to a plan A) is super helpful in achieving your long term goals.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love that everyone who watches one of my films will feel something different. Good, bad, sad, mad it will have some sort of evocative effect and I think that’s super cool.
