We were lucky to catch up with Harry Boston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Harry , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
I was shooting a wedding, subbing for a photographer who got really sick, and I didn’t know the couple. As I’m doing my thing I get talking to people as usual, and I meet this guy who had actually heard of me and followed me on Instagram. He started hiring me left and right and has become one of my favorite clients and friends!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into photography after I had gotten into some legal trouble and my future was looking bleak, I was down bad and my anxiety through the roof at all times. I had to attend classes, court, meetings, etc and it took literally all of my time and energy. I had been working a job as part of the requirements and I saved up and bought myself my first camera, because I’d always wanted to take photos but never actually tried.I took my camera everywhere and took photos of everything to free my mind. Through just posting my photos I started getting asked to photograph things like graduations, weddings, events, etc. my passion was now alive more than ever and I never looked back.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being told no or being flat out ignored was a huge part of my beginning. 9/10 times I would get no response at all when I would pitch myself to a business or potential client. I didn’t let that shake me, I went out and did free work for a long time just to get my name out there, and through my work now some of those same people who told me no or ignored me have actually hit me up, and I have to say it feels good to kindly remind them how I was Ignored at first, but now have solid business relationships that have kept me going thru slow times. I appreciate every client who even looks my way, but now I know my worth and don’t let anyone tell me otherwise.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Remain honest and don’t fall into trends you don’t align with. Be unapologetically you. I post what I like when I feel I should and don’t feel the need to hop on the newest trend to gain followers. I’d rather have 3,900 organically grown followers than 10k fake or bot followers, or followers who just saw one trend you did that went viral. Be you, don’t stray from that.
