We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Harrison Mark a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Harrison, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I cut my teeth in the creative industry through commercial photography. In fact it was a lot closer to documentary style work, under the masquerade of commercial advertising. There was an expectation to capture billboard worthy imagery with an incredibly small crew, in remote locations for a brand synonymous with world class imagery, Deus Ex Machina.
I carried these developed creative skills into my advertising work and found myself not only steering creative, but often times also being the one to put together the pieces of the puzzle in order to achieve results.
With a keen eye for the creative skills of not just myself, but others surrounding me I found joy, and creative fulfillment in bringing those people together to achieve a common goal, and thus I found myself in the role of producer.
My background in photography influences almost every element of production, and allows me a unique understanding of the perspective of the creative, whilst trying to cater to the needs of a client or agency.
Harrison, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a founding partner and executive producer at Mojave Productions, based between Los Angeles, USA and Sydney, Australia. My unique approach to producing comes from a previous life traveling the world as a commercial photographer, shooting in remote locations for class leading brands. Being able to see things from the eye of both a creative and producer, I am able to problem solve and find solutions without sacrificing the quality of work or creative vision. Working across feature films, TV commercials and branded content, you have to be somewhat of a Swiss army knife when it comes to creative production.
I was also a writer, producer, executive producer and second unit director on the feature documentary; The Desert Said Dance.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I truly believe any creative is their own harshest critic. I never really feel completely creatively satisfied with the work I produce. There is always room for improvement, for growth. Whilst others may compliment or celebrate your work, the internal voice that knows you can do better, for me, is what drives progress. It takes a lot of focus to not let these thoughts be confused with inadequacy, and to channel them into something that is a driving force for growth and self improvement. I suppose I could consider the day I am wholeheartedly happy with my creative work as a goal, although I anticipate those goal posts to simultaneously move further ahead as I inch closer.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I like to believe my own body of work helped to define my reputation. Creating something authentic and unique to myself.
