We recently connected with Harrison Lee and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Harrison, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
Something that I’ve come to notice and really enjoy about seeing new fans listening to my music is how many other artists are a part of the audience. To know that my music is influencing and helping other people to create new ideas of their own is the most beautiful thing about making art. I try to make the concepts around my music centered around an idea, but be ambiguous enough for people to make their own connections as to what it means to them. I’ve found the most fulfillment in knowing that my music is helping others to imagine and create their own craft and hope that the legacy of BrokinPaper is just that — a vessel of inspiration for people to create.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Harrison Lee and I produce music under the alias BrokinPaper. I make music across multiple genres, but my most notable songs SAPIOSEXUALITY, LUCKY, and 66023C have been compared to the work of French artist Gesaffelstein; showcasing the dark clubbing and minimal elements one would expect from something you would hear on a runway or in a well-known techno club in Berlin. I typically like to release projects with multiple songs, because I like to associate various sounds and attitudes with one idea. This helps not only drive the creative process for me, but also lets me try out different things while still having a clear direction that I want to take.
I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to build with BrokinPaper as an independent artist, as we’ve recently hit 50k+ monthly listeners on Spotify to a global audience, and have had music used by some prominent influencers on social media platforms. I’m super excited to share the new ideas that I’ve been working on this past year.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I myself am very picky when it comes to the music that I enjoy listening to. For me, the songs that I enjoy usually have elements in them that I would want to put in one of my own songs, or center an idea around. Because of this, I think that I’ve been able to really generate my own musical identity as BrokinPaper, which has been a compilation of specific sounds and moods; my goal is to continue being true to my own musical tastes and identity while appealing to the audience who wants to be a part of that journey.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect to me about being an artist is seeing supporters loving my art just as much as I do, and knowing that they are somewhat of a kindred spirit in the sense that they like the same music that I like. Especially when my work gets compared to artists that I listen to, like Gesaffelstein, Boys Noize, RL Grime, and Rezz, I can take pride in the fact that my music is being associated with prominent artists that I take inspiration from. And also because I’m a smaller artist, I know for certain that the fans who support me genuinely enjoy the music. It’s even extra gratifying to see other creators take inspiration from my work to fuel their own creativity.
